What a day with my kiddos

The other day I was cleaning out Tiger's cage (one of my male xanth's) hoping to resolve his hunger strike. I usually let him roam out in the yard while I do this, but apparently after feeding Jax (my other male xanth), I didn't properly close the cage. So, guess who escaped??

I saw out of the corner of my eye a sprinting Tiger running across the grass. I turn around only to see Jax going after him full speed! I didn't understand what was going on until it was too late...I guess Jax had felt like Tiger was invading his territory, and therefore got hostile about it. I went to go pick them up to prevent anything from happening, but I was a second too late. Jax bit Tiger square in the ribs! I split them up as gently as possible and picked up Jax to put him back in his cage, still kind of in shock. I really didn't think Jacksons go as far as biting each other! I figured they just have a horn fighting match, and that's it.

Fortunately, Tiger was okay. Poor thing was all black and stressed out for about 15-20 minutes following the bite...never seen him that stressed for that long, but I guess a bite will do that to you. You can see the bite marks but no blood or anything, so just a surface wound. It's weird though, because I've had them both out in the yard at the same time, even near each other, and not once did they go after each other. Just a head scratcher there.

The one positive out of the day was that I finally got Tiger to end his hunger strike with silkworms! This was when I first took him out of the cage. Turns out he loves 'em, so I started feeling a sense of relief until minutes later I find out that the container I was housing ALL of my silkworms in was contaminated with fire ants!! I managed to save about a dozen or so, but there was too many ants...probably hundreds. I maybe used about a fourth of the 100 silkworms I spent close to $40 ordering...what rotten luck, and totally frustated. Not to mention the poor silkworms that got ant raped, what a horrible way to die!

On a humorous side note, I found out my girl Kiwi is a jumper! Not from very high, but she actually jumped out of my hand while I had her out of her cage for cleaning, I guess I got too close to one of the guys cages so she made a run for it! It was a full on jump too, but maybe just 3 or 4 inches off the ground. Still funny though, and surprising.

Anyways, just thought I'd share the latest in my current adventures with my kiddies! Can't wait 'til they get older, I believe they're all around 6 months at the moment so still a ways to go before they're full-grown.

awh lol. keep an eye on the area he got bit to make shure it doesnt start getting bad. they can be a handful :)

Im glad your guy is ok.
THough, I have to admit, seeing a cham sprint would be pretty intersting to see.
HOpe he feels better, and glad your hunger striker is done being frusterating to you.
Sorry bout your silkies

Thanks cami...I actually felt worse for the silkies than I did about the ~$40 down the drain. And trust me, they were sprinting!! Which also contributed to the shock...across grass nonetheless...wish I got it on video...which of course would have been bad, but still quite a sight to see.

Honestly, Id feel bad about the money. But thats because I budget everything to the dime, and dont like respending money if i dont have to.
Which is why i was pissed! when my hornworms hatched, then promptly died two days later. 500 eggs... no survivors. 40 bucks later....
pupae and two already hatched and 1 inch long worms coming today.
I do wish youd gotten the sprinting on video. would have been awesome (just not the part where he bit the other guy) but it sounds like it was a warning bite, not a kill attack. whcih is good.
