Spent $40 on crickets. I feel like such a failure! I just can't bear to spend that much somewhere online and have the feeders all die again. There's a lot to be said for just walking in and out. Obviously they'll be fed up carefully before feeding off, but I'm feeling happier now there are feeders in the house again. And check out the pic, males on the food, females in the dirt! Reckon it's already a 50/50 mix of soil and cricket eggs! Poor girls.

Picked one off the food to hand-feed Ivy, no hesitation before shooting! Then she held it in her mouth and the look in her eyes said 'Huh, maybe you aren't as useless as you seem. Now get me MOAR!'

Hey before you spend a crazy amount of money again like I used to on crickets form Petco/Petsmart I would check out reptilefood.com i just bought a 1000 crickets from there and they probably gave me like 2000 lol i would say out of all of those crickets I had about 30-40 die off....Thats pretty good! Just my recommendation because i totally feel ya on spending that much, my girlfriend and I were spending $27.00 every 2-3 days to feed our, at the time, 9 Reptiles... lol gets expensive as all heck! But I would check them out Trill, why not?
 
I go to pet co actually a lot if I need crickets in between reptile shows. They have consistent larges and always healthy. Even though they are making millions at .12 cents my animals need to eat.

They also now stock wingless fruit fly cultures that really come in handy in a pinch.

They can work on policy and live stock though.
 
Do you ever make it to the Expos? I find feeders (of all kind) for decent prices at the Expos.

500 count crickets are $8
1000 count are $13-$15

Yeah I have an expo coming up where I might be able to get roaches and a few types of worms for my baby girl :) hopefully i can get phoenix worms, i Heard they are fantastic feeders, she will really enjoy.
 
I should go to the expos, but I find them quite upsetting. Last one I went to was the White Plains one in November. Whether it was the gorgeous animals packaged up like deli meats, or people carrying armfuls of tubs back to their cars, or the shady dealers selling all the WCs at the back, or dealers giving a discount because they accidentally chopped off a lizards tail while boxing it up, people grabbing animals from displays...

But damn, those cricket prices are good...
 
reptilefood.com is AMAZING! we order from there all the time. and they are so nice and if anything goes wrong with the order (mailman left our package out in the sun and half the crickets died) they replaced it for free :) love them
 
I interpreted that as how they are cared for now, I assumed they were kept differently before.

BTW, Trillian is a 'she'

They were kept similarly to that before though, I like the deep Rubbermaid because they can't jump out. I didn't have soil in there before though, I added it after accidentally breeding crickets in my gecko vivarium, which has a few live plants in it.

Yes! I have a box in the basement! It's been going for over a month, but I've already eaten through the babies (not personally) and the adults all seem to be using contraceptives. Hence my cricket panic after only finding 4 babies to feed Ivy yesterday.
 
What are the temps down there? Crickets like it a bit warm. Also, hows the ventilation in their container?

If they are not reproducing, my guess is they are too cold.

How large is you colony? and how are they kepy? (container, food and heat/humidity wise)??
 
Dubias: they were in the Rubbermaid that I've just put the crickets in, they are now in a plastic shoebox. I have about 8 females and 3 males. They were on top of the fridge, where it gets nice and warm, but they were recently banished to the basement, where it's warm, but not that warm. I'm experimenting with putting them in different parts of the basement to see where is warmest. I don't measure their heat/humidity. I'm tempted to put them back on top of the fridge again though, they are in a much smaller box, so might not be noticed for a while.

Crickets: I stopped using them a couple of months ago, after years, due to trying out dubias and finding out they don't smell. I don't think I'll have a problem breeding these crickets, the females went straight for the soil, they must have been bursting. But Ivy really likes crickets, so I think I'll breed them just to have other options, especially as the geckos aren't interested in slow food.
 
Oh and food is Bug Burger, made up or dry depending on how lazy I am (we don't have a microwave) along with kitchen scraps, usually carrots, kale, peppers, apples, oranges, collards etc.
 
I used to buy my feeders at petco until I had enough of being screwed. Now I buy mine from LLL usually I get 1,000 overnighted for $29.99(shipping included) and they're great. They ship them in a screened box with food and they ship them from CA to me in VT and only four died in the process. I definitely know they give you more than what you pay for too. That would never happen with petco sure if I went there to buy 1,000 crickets they would charge me ($120-$150) but really I would end up with 500 crickets and 250 of them would drop dead on me after the 7min drive home.
 
Just get an undertank heater, the stick on kind, put it on your dubia, and you are in business down stairs. :D:D

Someone has a ton of tiny babies cheap in the classifieds.
