here are things i have been wondering for a while:

my college professor has a veiled chameleon he is 1 year old and he keeps a hermit crab in the cage with the chameleon....is this ok? i asked him and he said they do not seem to bother one another.... but is this ok for others to do?

another thing is that there are moths all over the place here in my area i do not know what they are called but they are tiny and are yellowish/gold/brownish they are about they size of a chapstick cap. are they safe for cham. (veiled cham.)

last question i promise :], not sure if it is safe but are ivy plants safe for chameleons? i really like this ive plant my mom has in her kitchen it is pretty small she said i can have it but i am not sure if it is safe for chameleons, the ivy plant is green with white edges. and is growing some type of vine.

Hi there,

As far as the hermit crab goes, it's not always such a great idea to keep different species together. If the cham wanted to it could eat it, and I'm not sure but I don't think that would be good for it. Very tough exoskeleton and he could choke if he ate the shell.

If he has it setup like that and doesn't see any danger than that's his reasoning. I would not suggest you try it.

I'm very unknowledgable on moths and other bugs so sorry, I can't help out.

As for the Ivy... you need to determine whether it is a golden pothos ivy or a philodendron (unsure of spelling.) golden pothos is non toxic and wonderful to use. Philodendron is mildly toxic and probably unsafe. Unfortunately they look very similar. Since veiled chams really like their greens I'd suggest you make SURE you identify the ivy correctly before using it.

Hope that helps,
Andrea

As someone who has hermit crabs and chameleons, I'd say its a bad idea to house them together. Their environmental needs are quite different. Not to mention a chameleon might try to eat a moving crab - which could be bad for both.

Is the Ivy an English Ivy? http://www.blankees.com/house/plants/e_ivy.htm
if yes, thats poisonous, not a good choice.
If devils ivy, Pothos, thats okay to use.

Just wondering, what's the size of the enclosure the chameleon is in? Male veiled chameleons need a cage that is 4ft tall. And if it is 4ft tall I doubt the veiled would even see the hermit crab that often. I would also worry about the drainage. Most hermit crabs are kept in sand. If the veiled is receiving as much water as it should I would think the sand would get nasty (bad environment for hermit crab)

As for the hermit crab, the proffesor has the bottom part filled with wood chips i think he said he bought them at petco...

for the ivy plant the ivys mentioned up there non match with the plant i have

this is a picture i found on google it looks like my ivy but i am not sure... i will take a picture of my plant right now and upload it hopefully someone can recognize it. :]

alright so i am not adding that plant..:] is it safe to put in a venus fly trap? (plant) because some times those darn crickets hide and they eat my plants lol so i want to get rid of them somehow so the venus flytraps might be a good way.... plus the flytraps like being in a humid place...
