I got my veiled chameleon at a local pet store about 3 months ago. He's been growing fast and seems to be happy and healthy. I feed him meal worms dusted with calcium every other day and crickets sometimes as well.
His cage is kept at around 80 degrees and we spray him about four times a day, allowing the cage to dry in between mists.
About a week ago I noticed that one of his eyes had a yellow kind of film or scab behind his eye causing him to keep the eye closed for most of the time. I shower him about once a week because he really enjoys it and it has changed him from being pretty standoffish to more relaxed to handling. I read that showering may help to draw out whatever could be in his eye. He doesn't scratch at it much but when I wanted to get a closer look at what it was he wasn't fidgety with me, almost like he wanted me to get whatever it was out of there. The shower didn't help much to get it out but it eventually started to work itself out. I rinsed his eye with saline solution and wiped his eye with a cotton swab until a little yellowish particle came out, again he wasn't fidgety while I was doing this and seemed relieved once it was out- going back to roaming the cage more often like he had before I noticed the speck.
This was about a week ago that I removed it. Today I noticed there is another film on the same eye and tried rinsing with saline again but it didn't budge. I gave him a humid shower and that also did not help. Could this be an infection? Is there anything I should do at home to help before I take him to the vet? And is anyone from the Philadelphia area that can recommend a reliable vet experienced with reptiles?
