Uvb

My UVB bulb is on the side of my cage since my basking is on the top. Is this safe? My veiled seems to love it and sits in front of it and under the basking a lot.

My brother use to do this with his iguanas. Seemed to work fine for them, and I can't think of anything wrong with it applied to chameleons.

just a personal opinion

i dont think there is anything major wrong with it as long as the bulbs and distances are correct. the arcadia manufacturer on the uvguide website even has a stand up socket manufactured just for using a cfl on the side of the cage http://www.uvguide.co.uk/compactlamps.htm. personally i do have some issues with it, how important they are, might depend on who you ask. generally speaking, most arboreal chams are going to spend the majority of their time in the top of the cage. the general idea is to provide the uvb and basking available at the upper part of the cage where they can be utilized together, and to provide a gradual gradient of heat and light intensity as you move down the cage. i think it provides a more natural feeling for the cham to have both heat and light from above. if the cham over heats from his basking, he is going to travel down. since cages are taller than they wide, the cage may not have sufficient width or plantings to even allow the cham to escape uvb from the side if desired. and i am not confident that all chams would move sideways to self regulate either uva or uvb . i think they are better at deciding up and down. than they are right and left.
