UVB Lights and Distance from Cham

How close should the Cham be able to get to the uvb light (reptisun 5.0)? Or perhaps the question should be how far away should it be able to get from the light. Don't want to burn him..

Howdy,

Generically speaking for Veileds and Panthers as well as many other species, usually 6"-12" is a reasonable distance for a ZooMed Reptisun 5.0 linear tube. If your chameleon can select their own choice of distances in that range, that's even better. Otherwise, just give them a horizontal basking branch or vine that lets them move in and out of the UVB and heat source. Since chameleons need to be up to proper operating temp for the UVB to be effective, have the UVB and the basking heat lamp in close proximity so that the basking location provides both. Then he can move in and out of that location regulating his body temp and UVB exposure. Be sure that both the UVB and the heat source are aimed downward from the top and not from the side of the enclosure.
