UVB Light question.

Hey all, I have a 4 1/2 month old Ambilobe Panther. He is in a 26"x26"x50" home which is lined with steel mesh on all sides (no sharp edges anywhere for an accident) wrapped in aquarium paper on all sides except for the door and top. he has plenty of hiding room with a 3' Hibiscus and fake vines and sterilized Mock Orange sticks from the back yard. His temperatures all all good from 75 to 80 around the cage top to bottom and a 95 degree basking area... my question is my UVB light. I have a Reptical 5.0 compact light and it is mounted in the advised fixture for it which is vertically fixed. I know the light can spread more intensely if it were horizontal seeing as the size of the compact is just that... compact. Anyways, I was wondering if you believe this is far too low of a UVB source for such a big home for him?? Would getting a 30 something inch uvb light be more appropriate to rest on the top than this compact? (which hangs from the ceiling and lands 1" from the top of his cage) He doesn't get outdoor sunlight often, maybe an hour a week... So ya, Im talkin alot!!! New UVB or do you believe it is just fine... I cant find the reading levels for this particular light!
Thank you!

Hi!,

as for your question i might suggest a new uvb, reptisun "linear tube" light, about 18"-24" is fine, and using this light the maximum distance between the light and your cham is about 6"inches and its okay to place it ontop of your cage....the compact ones i hear can harm the eyes of chams cuz they are too intense but if i am wrong please someone correct me:)

good luck and i wish you the best for you and your cham:D

Hey thanks alot Ace. I think Im going to do that tomorrow early afternoon. Every little thing helps, ya know? Much appreciation!

Will do! as you see I am a fresh new member as of tonight, though I have been reading this forum every day for about 4 months, before my girlfriend and I got Eskimo (our lil one). All my pictures are on my phone thus far but will bluetooth them on to the cpu quite soon for sharing the love!

Cant wait man,

and awsome name for the "lil guy"

Good idea changing to the linear tube. Also, just be sure there is no plastic between the lamp and your chameleon. UVB does not transmit through plastic or glass (except special kinds). It might also be a good idea to buy a dual fixture so that you can operate a 6500K 'daylight' lamp along side the UVB lamp. This will increase cage brightness and help the plants to grow. One UVB and one heat lamp isn't very much light, in general. If you already have the fixture for the UVB lamp and it is only meant to hold one lamp, you can buy 6500K lamps in the CFL format. Just use a second clip light for the 6500K lamp.

Hey there, thanks for the input. The light doesnt have to penetrate through anything but the top which is not covered with aquarium paper like the sides. Its 1/4" spaced steel square mesh. I am going to get a linear tube UVB light very soon and that was a great idea to get a daylight bulb for the plants as well, i didnt think about that.
Thanks again!,
-Brian
