Tanzania Bans Wildlife Exports

Which ban ? Mr Mole got in a shippment last week, some guys from Eastern Europe too. A ban because of a theft via a cargo plane is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. Just African authorities can get such an idea...

Times three!

I'm assuming there was other concerns going on to provoke a complete ban.

I think it is a politician frustrated that something outside of his sphere of power is happening so he lashes out against something that is in his power.

Makes him look like he is doing something. The alternative is to go after the crime syndicate. It is much easier to take on the blokes that are waiting in line at the CITES application desk. They aren't as scary.

This is some kind of political stunt then to make those in charge look like they are handling the situation. This situation has not got any kind of legitimate angle to stop legitimate farmed chameleons from being exported from Tanzania.

It's just ridiculous. Today every cargo plane has exact routes, everyone at the airport knows where they land and the companys knowing of course where the animals landed and who picked them up.
I mean it's no little box with reptiles, this is a transport with probably over 100m³. It's like the minister is complaining so has stolen his complete house...

Sad story, but are we really surprised? That country is run about as well as Haiti, a good bit of people have to be involved in order to get a cargo plane that big out if the country. It's a shame we have to suffer for it

Even more reason to keep legitimate businesses intact. Legitimate businesses would help rebuilding the business infrastructure of that country. The farm Nick Mole uses has got a good reputation and in this industry that is tough to come by. I would hate to see them shut down due to lousy practices from others. If this happens none of these (if done appropriately/justifiably done) limited first hands examples from exotic parts of the world are going to be seen. Meaning not being seen, people are going to care less about conservation programs abroad due to not being able to be seen first hand and identify with the problems these exotic areas and magnificent animals that live there have. It would be starting from scratch when progress has been already made and would hate to see this approach applied.

Kind of saying success leads to further successes or accomplishments lead to further accomplishments.

Working with these species is a privileged of accomplished wild land conservation.

cause your greedy...just sayin.

Well, that was a well thought out reason for your comment. Especially coming from someone who owns/works (?) at a pet shop. I thought there would be an interesting reason behind the comment being that you more than likely have buy and sell WC animals. Guess I thought wrong.

I think motherlode has a good point about people needing to see these animals to care about them. I have spent several years doing conservation work and I never would have cared if I wasn't able to catch and keep salamanders when I was a little kid. That said, the scandal behind this ban is an atrocity and I would forgo access to WC animals if that alone would solve the problem.

cain: imo we are all greedy. for me it doesnt mean i have to work with every species to feel accomplished or to satisfy my desire because a animal is plentiful in the wild. many of our captured species we have now need more research and people like you with great knowledge could do some species a great deal. 90% of the many wild caughts i see monthly die. If a law was in place for all animals welfare and it was actually enforced and governed. i would feel different.

are you against the ban? if so, whats your reason?

Motherlode: Is your stand with any animal from tanzania for pleasure or legitimate research?
