Chameleon Info:

Your Chameleon - 2yr old male veiled cham. in my car for 2 months

Handling - Loves to be handled, everytime i open cage door wants to come out, climbs right onto my hand, out for about 20 min every other day.

Feeding - Large crickets right now, alternating between crickets and superworms every couple months until i can afford more variety

Supplements - RepCal calcium w/out Phosphorous or D3 every feeding, Flukers calcium w/out phosphorous but w/ D3 every other week, multi-vitamin w/ beta-carotine every other week.

Watering - Dripper onto leaves 45 min increments 2-3 times a day & cage/cham. spray down 2-3 times a day. yes i see him drinking often.

Fecal Description -brown blob attached to white/yellowish stringy blob

History - He was kept in captivity strictly for breeding for his first 2 yrs of life, i dont think that they gave him a very good environment, due to the fact that he was very adverse and bad at climbing when i first got him, his nails are slightly flattened making it hard for him to grip things, i think this is due to keeping him on a flat surface with nothing to climb, but i am just speculating. Over the last 2 months he has improved greatly, we have been taking baby steps moving up the cage as to not fall far distances, he is now hardly ever having issues.

Cage Info:

Cage Type - All screen enclosure, 24X24X48

Lighting - Day: Sun Glow 100W, 16" UVB bulb, 15W ceramic & 40W ceramic= these run all the time due to cold winter temps and old house. Night: ceramic heat bulbs. 12hr/12hr lighting schedule (day-9am-9pm, night 9pm-9am)

Temperature - Daytime temps stay between 70 and 75, basking spot at 80-85, night time 65-70 all measured with in cage thermometers

Humidity - 50-60% during day, allowing drying at night. Lowest reading first thing in morning after drying out at night 30%. Regulating humidity with large sponges at bottom of cage and spraying 3X day and drip system (also live plants) measured by hygrometer in cage

Plants - Live plants, pothos and Dracaena fragrans (corn plant) both of which are on the safe plant list on this site.

Placement - Cage is located in bedroom, not near any windows, fans, vents, etc. Top of cage right now is at 5.5ft from floor (planning on getting different base eventually)
Location - Ellensburg, WA

**The current issue im worrying about is the fact that his hands, especially the front ones are looking quite swollen and he has lost one claw on a front hand and one on a back hand. I am unsure if this is due to swelling or if swelling is due to claws getting pulled out. I cant really reference the order in which they may have happened.***

-Any ideas on what might be going on?
-Herp Vets in washington state?

Photos would help.
Could be an infection if the nails were pulled out....but its hard to know without seeing it.

Hi!

Would it be possible to get pictures? I can think of several things that might cause swelling. I'm hoping pictures will help someone with experience recognize which it might be.

I would definitely say he needs to see a vet, although I have no idea where you can find one in your area. I found mine by Googling it.

Can you post pictures?

I will try to post pics soon, i do not have a digital camera and therefore have to wait til my boyfriend gets off work to use his. so hopefully by the end of tonight i will post them. sorry i know they would really help. He is otherwise fine, eating, pooping, looks healthy otherwise.

Gout is usually in the ankles/wrists and if the toes are swollen its usually infection. (Swelling in ankles/wrists can also be infection though.)

i am hoping to not have to take him to the vet, it is 2 1/2 hours away and over a mountain pass but if i need to i will do it.

photos, sorry they are not very good.

I'm sorry if I'm being dense, it's been a rough evening at the DoLots, but has the swelling just started or has it been there but was less important as a problem than the not able to climb and other such problems? If his feet have been that way for 2 months, I tend to think it's not a infection. If it's changing then yes, I would think infection.

I'm just wondering if his feet got that way during his years in improper care.

Gout? I cant see all of the being infected. Possible but imo unlikely.

What do you gut load with? Where do you buy your feeders from and do you know what they gut load with?

also 2 years old and 2 months in your care...

Do you know the past owners supplement schedule? Did they over due the d3?

Helpful tips (If it is gout)..

See if there is any possible way he is getting animal protein.
See if he ever had to much D3. You can get an xray done to see if he is having renal failure.
HYDRATE THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS out of him!

He never had a problem with not being able to climb, he would just try to climb the screen cage and wasnt able to due to the small holes, i dont know if this is what took out the claws or not. all i know is his feet are swollen now and he has 2 claws missing, he is otherwise fine, goes about his day with no problems.

i have no way of getting information about his previous time at the breeder.
I have no way of taking him to a reliable vet thats going to know anything unless i drive 2 and a half hours and spend the gas money to get there and whatever its going to cost to be there, please let me know if there is anything besides hydrating him i can do to help.

I've seen aluminum screen do that to chameleons. It isn't gout. You should get a vet to take care of the swelling- bacteria related.

I haven't seen that in a long time, but then again I've been using reptariums for a long time now...

It's more of a problem for large chameleons. Claws get pinched in the screening.

Thats wild. Ive seen one hand do it but every toe looks swollen here ..Even the ones that still have toe nails. You said bacterial infection and big chameleons on screen cages. Just for my own knowledge. How are the toes becoming infected with no nail loss, wounds or is this a topical skin infection? The left rear foot is not missing one toe nail but looks swollen like a mofo...
