Switched to large crickets, won't eat

My male Ambanja has been a slow grower. So at almost 5 months I think he's big enough to switch from small/med to large crickets. And I showed the petsmart girl the attatched pic and she said she thought he was big enough. Well I put about 5 in his cage yesterday when I got home cause he had some small ones earlier. He ate one as soon as I set it on the screen, like he always does. Won't eat from my hand unfortunately but instantly when I set them down! Well, they seem to all have been eaten, but today when I put 10 more in he hasn't touched them. And he's avoiding his basking spot where the crickets have congregated. Just saw him closing his eyes too which I know is a bad sign!! Will he just need time to adjust and be ok or what do I do??

Despite what the "petsmart girl" told you, make sure the larger crix are no longer than the distance between his eyes. If they are still a little on the large size for him, offer him some smaller ones and see what happens. Larger prey takes longer to digest so don't expect him to eat as many as often. Chams are more willing to eat prey that LOOKS familiar. What happens if you put a few smaller sized crix in with one or two larger ones? He may tell you which he still prefers by how he selects them. Also, if you put too many in at once it may be harder for him to isolate one to shoot at.

I wasn't going off the petsmart girls expertise, just getting another opinion. The crickets are about the width of his head. I started one at a time and I scattered the placement. I can get small ones tomorrow to try but I was hoping to avoid purchasing more of those tiny things.
