So great!

Hi everyone. I have been checking out this forum for a few months and I never really introduced myself. My name is Shauna and I purchased a panther chameleon from the Kammers in July. His name is Fuego and he is amazing.

I just wanted to let you all know that this forum is so incredibly helpful. I have learned so much here! Thank you!

I hope I don't get beat up for this..... but Fuego is thriving in my fourth grade classroom! I spoke to Liddy Kammer at great length about the possibility of having a chameleon in the classroom. She was in full support of it knowing the research I have done and the guidelines I have in place to keep him safe and healthy.

Here in PA, many people are frightened of reptiles due to lack of exposure. I have always loved reptiles, and I wanted to educate my students about their ecosystem, and how to care for an exotic animal. There are so many picture books with chameleons as the main character, that I use those books to teach writing, character attributes in reading, ecosystems in science...the list goes on and on. Fuego helps them to make the real-life connections to apply what they have learned.

The class has learned how to respect Fuego. They do not move quickly around him, they don't touch his cage, they know how to interpret his "stressed" colors. It is amazing to see their behavior around him.

Again, I just wanted to say "Hi" and thank you for the knowledge you share!

I think that's great you have him in your class! Children are more likely to grow up to care about their world and the things in it if they have firsthand experience and exposure to such things.

Welcome to the forums!! Yes, there are probably alot of people who will not agree with keeping it in a classroom. I have my chameleon right next to my computer and he has always been in the center of things with my family. Now there are only 4 of us mind you, but I think they can adjust if done so from an early age. My chameleon is not bothered at all by any of us.
