Sick Veiled Cham

Hey guys and gals,

I have posted about this chameleon before, and I am unfortunately here to do so yet again.

Your Cham- His name is Dvorak. He is a male veiled chameleon who is a little under two years old. I have had him since he was about 10 weeks old.

Handling- I handle him 2-3 times a week.

Feeding- He is currently fed 2 medium to large Dubias every other day.

Supplements- The Dubias are dusted with the Flunkers muli-vitamin with the beta kerotine. He gets .05 ml of liquid calcium once a day, along with .05ml of a pain medicine that the vet gave us.

Watering- With the liquid medicine that he is getting, he also gets .9ml water. He gets another 1ml syringe of water in the late afternoon. He gets misted 3-4 times daily for about 2 minutes, allowing the cage to dry between misting. He also has a dripping system that drips all throughout the day. I don’t always see him drinking on his own, but I know for sure that he is getting about 2ml consistently every day.

Fecal Description- Dvorak is urating normally, an off white, normal consistently. Not pooping as much as normal, but the poop does look normal.

History- I have been battling the issue I want help with for some time. The vets around my area have not been much help. The most help I have gotten has been up here.

Cage info: The cage info is a little interesting right now, because he is in a temporary cage. He has been in there for about 4 days, and the hope he will be back in his bigger cage tomorrow. I will update this when he is in the larger cage. The reason that he is in the smaller cage is because my university gave us a very short notice on getting moved out, and I couldn’t get the bigger cage to fit in the car to take with me, even after it was torn down.

Cage type- All mesh cage, 16x16x24

Lighting- A 6” T5HO uvb tube light. a 100W ‘Nightlight’ and a 75W Halogen flood bulb. He has light from 8am to 8pm. The nightlight does turn off at night because he seems not to like it. He has consistent been awake when I go in to check on him at night.

Temp- His basking spot sits around 92F and the rest of the cage sits at around 84F. the lowest overnight temps reach around 65F I use A digital temperature gauge for the temp.

Humidity- I do not know the humidity of the cage, but I anticipate that it is rather dry. Before I accidently broke the hygrometer (4 days ago) he was sitting average about 40% and up to 85% after mistings.

Plants- No live plants, lot and lots of fake foliage though. Plenty of things for him to run around on, or to catch water drops.

Placement- The cage sits on top of an unused dresser in my room. No one goes into my room, except me when I sleep. The top of the cage sits about 6 feet off the ground.

Location- Bottom right of Iowa, about 30 minutes from Davenport in Muscatine Iowa

Current Problem- There are a few problems that I am working to solve. Firstly, his ankles are very swollen. I have had this problem for a while, and for a little bit it seemed to get better, but for the last 2-3 weeks its been getting worse and worse. He also will not close his front hands, presumably from the ankle issue. From the info that I have gathered, Gout seems to be the most likely candidate. Also, he seems to not sleep as much as normal. He also is always shedding.

Thank you all for your continued help and support with me and my Cham.

You need to get him to the vet asap. You should see if that’s MBD. He doesn’t look like he is in critical condition but you need to help him fast.. You should get some at least one real plant so he can eat some leafs because veiled chams eat leafs too and you should feed him with more than one kind of bugs. I know that mine loves to chew on benjamin ficus and try to add crickets aside dubias. Wish you all the luck! By the way this is my opinion I am no professional.

It looks like your chameleon might have gout.
Whatever is going on its vet time I'm afraid...ASAP too.
Yup, that looks like gout to me. Also, a multivitamin at every feeding is too much. Calcium at every feeding, multivitamin twice/month.

Further to my last,

Though lots of people will tell you gout is the result of improper husbandry, that isn’t always the case. People who live healthy lifestyles and eat right get gout too. Genetics can play a huge role. That being said, high protein feeding can be a factor. What are you feeding your dubias?

Don't leave it too long. Things will only get worse.

You may want to look at what you're feeding the insects and the chameleon. If you post it here and be very specific I might be able to help.

Where do you live?
