Shipping question

VeiledChams

Avid Member
My 12yo cousin is fascinated by my chameleons and has been dying to get one. Now that my babies started hatching, it may be an opportunity for him. The thing is, he lives in Colombia. Does anyone have any information about any shipping issues I may have? I need to know if I need a permit or whatever.

Aside from legalities, he lives in Bogota, which is at an altitude of about 8,000 feet. Anyone keep chameleons at such altitude?

If we are able to find a way to get the chameleons from here, I will be sending everything they'll need from here, so that is not of my concern. As for food, they can find plenty over there.

Any and all comments, suggestions, and info is appreciated.

I don't personally have any knowledge but I would call "ship your reptiles" they may be able to answer some of your questions, good luck I am sure someone with experience in that area will chime in :)

Your relatives in Columbia will need to check with their version of USFWS. Whatever Columbia calls their version of that agency will be able to tell them if any CITES permits are needed. You will need to check with USFWS to see if you need any export permits or licenses on your end. Its not going to be easy and its NOT going to be cheap either. An export like this will take months to complete also. Good luck, its going to be alot of phone calls and alot of paperwork.

So you guys may know, I was looking at the cites list, and veiled are not there, right? It doesnt state a country to which it applies. What does this mean?

Your best bet is to call USFWS and have the relatives in Columbia call their countries wildlife service (if they have one). They should be able to give you an idea what its going to cost and what you need to do.

Sounds good. I've been reading on the USFWS website on requirements and what not. I'll give them a call.. Thanks again Scott

you should make him send you a parrot or monkey for trade in that deal if you find everything out!!!

I don't know about the sipping legalness but I know for a fact the altitude wont be an issue. I live in Utah and basically the whole state is above5 5,000 feet just make sure he knows all the ins and outside their care and he'll be good to roll. Plus if its a veiled from what I recall their natural habitat is somewhat mountainous so it might just be a perfect environment!

Awesome! thanks, I was worried about that cause 8000 feet is pretty high up. I have personally written a detailed care sheet for my little cousin and my uncle so they learn everything before they make the final decision on trying to get the chams to Colombia
