Here are pictures of a baby carpet, just hatched from a reptile store near me. I told them I am 90% it is male, which sucks because it is the only one and I wanted a female. what do you all think? am I right?

i dont know anything on gender for this species. but hole crap that baby is small!
you just convinced me i want a carpet!!!!

yeah i'm pretty sure carpets are a panther species. everything says they are sexed the same way, and they from the furcifer genus.

I think they are just a small kind of panther species. or panthers and carpets have the same genus so they are similar in that way? It's too technical, but panthers are furcifer paralis, and carpets are furcifer lateralis

They are a different species. Panther chameleons are a specific species, not the genus. For example, a F. pardalis is a panther, a F. oustaleti is an oustalets, etc.

A better picture would help.

ah got it. but still they are sexed the same way. unfortunately I don't have a better pic I got these off their facebook. I wanted to get a female but unfortunately only this one hatched.

If you could get a better lit picture, that is a little closer to the base of the tail, we should be able to sex the neonate.

As far as being "little panthers", I could see what you're saying, but I think the way you said it was a tad confusing. As both of you know, Panthers are known as Furcifer Pardalis, while Carpets are Furcifer lateralis lateralis. Aside from this, they do share the same genus, but like Pssh has said, are different species.

You sex all chameleons the same, by the base of the tail. While some species do exhibit tarsal spurs, many more do not. So, like I said earlier, get a clearer picture, and we can sex it for ya :)

Is there such a device that can get a clear picture of the tail section on a chameleon that small:confused::eek:

:p Of course. If you have a camera with a Macro/Close-up function, that usually does the trick. Or, you could have a DSLR set up that allows you to do that, but basically the same thing.

Wow. Even on my macro setting I couldnt get that close with my camera without it going blurry I think:rolleyes:

I could get the picture with my camera but the baby does not belong to me and I don't know if the owner would want me taking a picture of him. He may not even have him on the store floor.
