Setting up my cage and some plants

Ok my 18x18x36 cage should come in by the weekend. I have a question.. I bought some ficus plant from home depot and wanted to ask if I can just use their soil blah blah. Is it good to go? Or do I have to take out their soil and replace with fresh ones? I notice there are some white clumps on the soil? Is this some toxic fertilizer? Also where can I get pothos at? I can't seem to find em..

Also I went to my local pet store and seek advice on veileds. She told me its too cold here in San Francisco and I will have to rig my screen cage so it can obsorb more heat and humidity. She told me to cover up some of the screens.. like the left and right side with plexis glass.. and then cover the back with wood.

I had a female chameleon YEARS ago, like about 5.. she did well until I didnt give her a spot for her to lay her 2 batch of unfertilize eggs.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

Can't help you on the San Fran climate, but for the plants, yes, you need to dump the original soil, and rinse the entire plant and its roots off completely, and then replant in 100% organic potting soil. I also cover the soil with large river rocks afterwards to keep my cham from ingesting it, but some others don't do this.

I got my pothos at Lowes, they had nice healthy ones. If you don't have a Lowes, try a local nursery. Best of luck with your cham!:)

thanks neighbor for the tip. I also bought some real spanish moss from home depot to cover up the soil. Maybe I should use your idea with the rocks.

thanks for your reply brad.. Thats what I thought.. She said its too cold here in S.F and veiled need to be in a very warm temp which is 95degree.. but thats what heat lamps are for.. She just stating that I have to do something to keep the heat in place.. yes im keeping them indoors :p

yea im getting a lot of mix answers but I am going to rely on this forums for answers:) So what wattage light bulbs would you recommend? Heat emitter,UVB and sun glo.

You really want veileds? Where in SF do you live?

I used to live in San Bruno, where it's very humid, foggy, and cold even during the summer since it's near Pacifica Beach.

I think that weather in San Bruno is perfect for Jackson's. In fact I read somewhere there are Jacksons that live in Morro Bay which is not too far from SF.

But if it's your first cham and you like veileds.. You can certainly keep em indoors. I think it's too cold for them outside. I'm looking at the weather forecast near Van Ness and for this week from friday thru tuesday, the highest they're predicting is a 70F

NEVER listen to any petstore workers about chameleons. They dont even know how to house them in the store and take care of them:(

I live in the sunset ' I like the veileds color better then jacksons. I've raise jacksons before but I'm gonna start off with veiled and then the near future I might go panther or jackson: where is this place where jackson live. If I can catch them I will be happy to send some your way.

San Fran is nice! I wish I could live there but its toooo expensivo!

My best friend from near Walnut Creek is coming down on the 4th of July :D. She lives like an hour away (in the boonies :D) from San Fran.

If you keep him indoors, you can just use the basking bulb & Reptisun 5.0

Like Brad says, you don't need to rig anything up.

nice!! If you ever breed ur panthers keep me in mind I can be your potential buyer haha. Can't wait tip wed for the baby pair veiled comes in.
