Selling to pet stores?

Have any of you cham breeders ever sold young to a pet store to be sold? I want to breed panthers but i don't wanna be stuck with them, and there is a nice locally owned pet store up the street that i think might let me sell babies in their store. they had a veiled cham there the other day. I know it would all depend on the owner there but i just wanted to know if anyone has worked a deal with a pet store near them or just sold them from home.

I personally wouldn't but purely out of a moral (if you want to call it that) objection to selling to pet stores. I figure that if and when I breed my pair, I would want to send each and every one to owners that at least seem competent, selected by me. People that buy chameleons at pet stores tend to be impulse buyers that might not be good keepers at all, and this might spell doom for the babies that you carefully tended to as eggs and then invested so much food, time, and money into to raise them to selling age. But this is just me, most pet stores don't care for their reptiles very well to begin with. I'd hate to see who buys them.

If you do want to go ahead with it, I would talk to the owners ahead of time, to see if they'll even let you. They usually won't buy from you unless you've got a vendor's license or something like that. At least all the pet stores near me won't. So you'd have to scout that out before you get into anything.

I have not bred Chameleons. But with experience in breeding dogs and rabbits in the past and doing adoptions for rescued animals... I would not want to sell to pet stores. For me personally I want to know were and who I am placing animals with. Making sure I am also there for any questions that that they may have over the years and also just to be a part of watching them grow up in their forever homes.

Yea thats true. I'm just hoping that when i do breed and raise them that i find new owners. I contacted a breeder the other day about getting some and he was trying anything to get me to buy some. just seemed like he was stuck with them and looking to get rid of them. I just wanna know if breeders do well selling from home.

You can never tell how good a owner of a chameleon will be no matter who they are. The thing i always try to do is check the store out. Talk to them about chameleons. Do they know anything? Do they listen? How do they keep other animals, are they all healthy and kept in proper environments? I would talk it over with them. making sure all husbandry aspects are correct, they are educated and sell proper products for chameleons.

Each pet shop is diffrent. There are a couple shops that I have sold to and a lot of shops that will never see any of my chams! Check out (ask if needed)there chameleon knowloge. And trust your feeling about them. As far as the money goes plan on taking a loss the first few clutches.Try to keep your clutches small untill you get the hang of raising babies. I feel for every baby I raise is 1 less taken from the wild. good luck;)

Ugh don't mention selecting buyers, I made the mistake of saying that and atleast 10 people went on a rant on how I can't do that, how in nature they die alot so I shouldn't try to select good owners, etc. Pretty sure in nature they don't get pampered this much, so I dang will select who I feel like.

That's ridiculous. When JannB had her clutch of veileds, she essentially hand picked the members she felt she could trust and asked us if we wanted a baby. Some of them have still died but just because things happen, even in the hands of competent owners. Like complications during egg laying, etc. But maybe 5-6 have died out of 37? Good odds to me. I wonder how many of the chams sold at pet stores survive with those numbers. Probably very, very few.

If you want to take your time and do it right you certainly can. If you just want to make a few bucks then sure, who cares who they go to so long as they pay. But if you plan on doing it once for the experience, why not be selective. After all, you've invested a lot of time and money into them (and dare I say, love?) why just let them go to bad homes.

i wouldnt sell them to pet stores becuase i dont trust them i even see them keeping their older animals in wrong cages like they had a adult panther in a tiny cage that was 1 ft tall and was all glass... poor guy would paw at everything that walked by... also like olimpia said people are impulse buyers they would buy it then the shop owners might sell them random junk and the chameleons might have a stressfull short lived life.

ive only really been breeding at a semi-business level for about 2 years i've only had about 8 groups of babies, in my beginners experiance of breeding and selling chams, pet stores were very helpful to me, i had some moral standards though, i ended of selling alot of them to smaller reptile stores in ontario (mostly GTA) as long as i could see they had chams, and they were being kept well, there was even a time i sold some to PJs pets as long as they agreed to keep them in good condition, when i came back they were so i was happy :) . When i first bred my veiled chams when i was in my teens, i just sold them for cheep online and even gave afew away.

So I feel like being the voice of "why?" tonite.
I understand you want to sell babies, but what are the reasons for breeding in the first place?
Have you researched your male/female bloodlines
Is it for the experience?
Do you plan on making it a viable business?
Is it to make a buck?
Just to say you did it?
Do you have any breeding experience with other animals
do you have enough experience to keep a single Cham, much less an entire clutch?
I don't know why these kind of threads get under my skin, but they do and I am allowed to voice my opinion like everyone else.
All I think of are innocent animals in the hands of inexperienced people (for the most part)
Go ahead, im in a mood tonite, bring it on

when i have babies for sale there is only 2 pet stores here that i will sell some of my babies through. both are friend owned and i will have proper care sheets and put this site on for one to visit if they can't get a hold of me for any questions that need to be answered. also i will be posting on the care sheet the vet that i put on the top of my list in case they need emergency care for or health issues. but the one thing is if you do do what i am going to and visit frequently they also know for the type i have and how rare it is up around my area i wont' sell at wholesale price but i will give up to 75 dollars for my panthers and 30 for my vieleds.

i agree our society has turned these animals into pets, who unfortunately are given to bad owners, but there is nothing we can do, if someone wants something these days, they will get it. as for reasons to breed, i dont see why it has to be totally selfless. I started breeding because i thought lizards were cool, i now use them as a small business, certainly not an extensive ammount of profit, but i started breeding because i had a love for reptiles, and i didnt want a job that was boring as hell. Selflessness and self preservation should be balanced.

So why...
Ive been fascinated with panther chams since i was in grade school. Ive been really wanting to get a male and female here shortly. from 2 different breeders.
No i do not have experience breeding, but i've been reading a lot about it.
No i don't plan on making money.
Yes i just want to do this for the experience. just to say i've done it. I don't plan on making a web page and selling them online.
The pet store up the street that i am talking about is very friendly. they have in store pets everywhere! a tortoise that walks around, a dog behind the counter and a few monitor lizards that chill where they please.
The owner had a veiled cham for sale and when i inquired about it he told me that are a lot of work, their habitat has to be a certain way and ect. Even tho i already knew some basic knowledge about chams, he didn't try to push it on me.
So no i wasn't planning on selling them to a pet store just to get rid of them. I'm pretty sure this owner could screen new pet owners pretty well. I just wanted to hear others experiences with their pet store relationships.
And thank you to who answered. And you have every right to ask these questions, but i was just wondering...
