Save Energy

Hello!

Since I have had my chameleon my power bill has gone up $60. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to conserve energy while still keeping my Chameleon's light on as much as it is needed??

Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!

What type of lighting are you using? I don't know if some types of UV lighting use less energy than others, but there may not be too much you can do. They need proper temps as well as the proper light for 11-12 hours every day. Instead, look for other things around the house you can make more efficient...check the power draw of your appliances, use "kill switches" on anything you leave plugged in but are not using all the time, unplug anything you are not using that has a transformer plug, use timers for other lighting, weatherstrip doors and windows, get a programmable thermostat, get rid of other incandescent lighting, lower the temp on your water heater (if its electric), reduce the time you use tv, stereo, computer, etc.

Wow are you raising fish, or chameleons. I didn't know the electric bill jumps that much don't tell my wife! :D

I noticed about a 10$ electrical bill increase with my Cham and frogs, but $60 seems excessive! Could there be something else going on? Changing weather can be havoc on hvac systems if they are not programmed well. Did you check that your thermostat settings haven't changed? If we lose power, I have to adjust the heat pump settings as it will default to factory settings.

Just a thought.

Assume $0.10 a killowatt hour

assume 12 hour days so 360 hours.

You are talking literally 2000 watts per hour to keep a cham happy.

Even if its something outrageous like 40 cents per kilowatt hour, that is still 500 watts per hour to keep the cham happy.

This is almost impossible...

Oh you lucky people who can pay $0.10 per kh! It could be worse...right now my electric rate is about $0.60 per kh! But even here I didn't see that much of a jump in my rate due to chams. Something else must be going on...like a rate increase?

How long have you been tracking this increase? if it is just recent, it could be weather related, or some other item like a fridge that needs coils cleaned. Also, change AC filters every 3 months and don't use ones that cause your system to overwork. Many of the allergen filters cause your units to work much harder to cool a room.

As for power use from an enclosure, Are you using halogen bulbs? What items are you using that may be energy eaters?

And besides, your cham is worth it :D. Stop using lights at night and walk around using the braille method. And also, don't cook your food. Its better to eat raw products anyway. (OK, I'm done being silly now.....)
