Roaches

I really want to give my 8 month old make veiled some Dubai roaches because one of our local pet stores started selling them. I know they're extremely easy to breed and are very good for chams. My mother doesn't want them near my house. My siblings and dad don't care, but my mom obviously does. What should I tell her to let me get some, and possibly breed them?

Get like 10 or so to show her they will do no harm. Show her that they don't stink, can't climb, don't fly, or do anything that American roaches will do...

Other than that, there's really nothing else I can say...

Show her the pros and cons of dubias compared to other feeders. Such as noise, smell, upkeep, nutrition.. etc.

If she is anything like my sister don't, i repeat DON'T show her the dubias directly. You dont want to become deaf or her to faint. Anyway i just wanted to add this fact "there are over 4000 species of cockroaches, but only about 20-30 ARE pest species" (the dubia is NOT one of the pest species.) Also you should tell her the ways you will keep them contianed and out of sight.

They are pest species... to families in Rio de Janeiro.

Lol... not to worry, they would not survive in a U.S. climate.

Ok thanks everyone. I'll try. She won't faint lol. She'll just slap me if I shove a Dubai in her face

Read the entire thread. Says they couldn't live here but then it also says they can infest a home easily.

Perhaps your mom will let you purchase a few occassionally to be fed off very soon to your chameleon after only minimal gutloading. She might be even more inclined if the pet store would sell you all males. Maybe you could talk about how you would keep them in a container inside of another container, and how you would only cup feed them to your chameleon and always watch to ensure they are immediately eaten (or removed).

beyond that - Mom's house, Mom's rules.

A chameleon does not NEED dubia.

Well chameleon would PERFER dubia

Well chameleon would PERFER dubia

And no chameleons do not prefer dubias. They just tend to be a bit better than most feeders. You would be completely find with crickets, silk worms, butterworms, hornedworms, locusts, etc.

I bought a hundred at a reptile show a while backfor a little treat for my lizards my beardie and Leo loved the but my Cham wasn't very interested in them she was only 2 or 3 months tho but anyway I just lied to my mom and told her that if they get out they will just die as I told her with my snake that got out and I found 6 months later that was still healthy just saying a little lie won't kill anyone if you know what I mean ;)

Well there much easyier to contain that crickets so there not going to be all around the house like crickets witch is a bonus

Most parents have some sort of stigma towards the word "roach" must be something leftover from their old hippy days IDK...

I remember reading that one member here only refers to them as dubia beetles lol. Most parents aren't entomologist and won't know beetle from roach when they see it. Dubia beetles all the way!

If you have a system in place that makes it clear they can't escape or survive if they do, that should help.

For example, you can use mealworm dishes with a lip to feed them in the cage to ensure they don't climb out and about. This is what we use at our breeding facility to keep them contained, and it works very well.

They also can't climb glass or even plastic at all, so you can explain that aspect to her. Years ago when I still lived at home, that was the deciding factor for my parents. I showed them the smaller roaches that don't have wings (the smaller ones look the least "roachy"), and how they couldn't even climb the sides of the plastic cup they were in.

Good luck!
