so... i use a reptisun 5.0 compact bulb in my chams light hood along with a red light for night time and a white light for day time basking. is the compact bulb bad for chams? i have heard little about them.

Look on the package you bought the compact bulb in.
If it was made in 2009 its SUPPOSE TO BE okay.
Im still not a fan of them though.

You shouldnt need a red light at night unless it drop below 65F in your house.
Even then you shouldnt use a red light because chams CAN actually see it.
It would be better to use a cermaic heater bulb because it emits heat with out any
light.

Does this apply to Infrared lights also? I am not aware if chams can see IR light or not.

what kind of infrared light? Chameleons should still be able to see the light from a red "IR" light. It is just a scam to sell more junk.... Most of the stuff you see in stores is just there to get them more money, is it needed for the animal? most of the time no.

Im not actually sure about that but I do know that the red bulb they sell at the stores that supposedly chameleons cant see and all the petco ppl tell you that,
well they actually can see it :p

I forget where I heard or read this but "just cause its got a picture of a chameleon on it, doesnt mean its for a chameleon" LOL :D

This kind.

infrared, infrared frequency (the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum; electromagnetic wave frequencies below the visible range) "they could sense radiation in the infrared"

it takes specialized organs to see IR light such as pits in some snakes. I was only curious i doubt it will often go below 65F in my house I just wanted to be prepared.

I only saw the bulbs at petcosmartwonderpetland and didnt even look at the box lol

Yes they can  It just won't look 'red' to them.

You and I and all the members on this forum can feel IR.

Hah! lol dont worry about that for me :D

As for space heaters i dont like them, while the people i know who's house burned down where idiots, they still lost a home. That is why i was asking.

To be honest if it gets below 65 here buuuuuuuuuur

Oh are you talking about the ceramic heater bulb I was taking about

Theyre not like space heaters, theyre like flat weird looking bulbs that just dont emit light, only heat.

I would only use them if it got really really cold because Ive heard stuff
about how they get really hot and have cause burns if you dont like monitor them right or if its too close to the enclosure. :/

The real question is does it look like a light source or a heat source.

That's exactly why i asked. I want them to feel it, not "see it"

Not that it matters i understand why ceramic heaters are recommended, so you don't even have to worry about it. :D

. If you have temp issues in your home at night it would be a good idea to use a ceramic heater.

ReptileUV.com has a cool heat emitter that screws into a normal lamp socket.
I see im an idiot and cant read fair enough lol:p NOT space heaters then, that makes me feel better

well thankyou guys... im going to get a new hood tonight then cause mine holds the two (red & compact). and mabey a ceramic bulb for the basking lamp, just incase because i live in New York and travel to Maine where it gets chilly in my house

yeah sorry for the hijack, seemed like a good time to bring it up. Let us know what you go with and the results :)

Just like a light bulb heats the air, so does a ceramic heater. So if you get a ceramic heater that is too hot for the situation, put it on a dimmer or buy a lower output. They need to be monitored just like a heat lamp.
