Thanks!
I'm using a Nikon D40

If you want to get those kinds of shots you need you camera to react when you tell it to.
Trust me- I think it took about 10 crickets that day to get a full extension picture of the tongue.
What I mean by getting the camera to respond when you tell it to, then you will need to put the lens manual focus.
That way you can set you self up by focusing ahead of time, and when the chameleon goes to shot you snap the picture.
If your in auto focus the camera focuses, beeps, then shots and by then its already gone.
I like to shoot in Aperture Priority, so you can bring your F/ to around 9-16 for more depth of field.
The more focus you have the better your chance of having the whole picture in focus.
You will need to use you flash because the picture will be very dark without it.
If your outside in good light you can use Shutter Priority and control how fast it opens and closes.
I think the XTi goes to 1/500 of a second which is plenty to stop almost any motion.

Here are some of pics that I posted before:

I literally have about 100 more of them, but I'm obviously not going to post them all.

xti goes up to 1/4000, but your flash only works up to 1/200 unless you have a speedlite flash 430 or better.

1/500 is good for a lot...but not fast enough for these guys...
