question for hissing roaches breeders...

Hi everyone!
Im about to start a new insect colony....
Im thinking about madagascar hissing roaches this time.
The guy that sells them is asking me what size would I like them to be?


this are the options for every box I order:
25 little ones or...
15 medium size or...
5 large size

Im thinking about getting 4 or 5 boxes... what size would it be better? and how many boxes would it be enough?

Depends how fast you need them to reproduce, how many you will feed off, how warm you will keep them and what you will feed them.

I started my colony with two adults. But I suggest you start with as many adults and mediums as you can afford. At least two boxes of the large, and one medium. Feed off one of the mediums (after you gutload it) to make sure your animal likes them. (The adults will bee too big probably)

I would def start with adult and medium sized hissers. Do you know if your cham even likes them? As stated, the adults will probably be too big to consume, but you'll need great numbers of them to kick start the colony...

We used to have some at a zoo where I worked and they seemed to grow to maturity very slowly, even at a toasty 80-something degrees. So I would start with adults/mediums as well so you already have some of those breeding and then you only have to wait for more babies, instead of waiting for your babies to become adults, breed, and have babies themselves.

Best case scenario..

Get 10 adult females and 2 males. @80 degrees you will have nymphs within a month, feeders in two. I feed off the most of the males nymphs and keep the the females.

Do they breed pretty simple? I brought 70 of these this week about 15 medium an the rest adults, my chams munched the mediums up strait away so I'm hoping to get this colony going strong

They produce much, much slower than dubia. They take forever to reach adulthood. I wanna say 6 months from nymph to sexual maturity? I'm certain that someone will correct me...
