I've found it is. I've used both perlite and vermiculite for 20 years and really have no clear preference. I use equal weights perlite and water, or slightly less water. I do like vermiculite in that I don't often weigh it- I just put water in it and squeeze the excess water back out before setting the eggs in it. Also it has become more readily available in my area- most of the perlite in our chain stores now has miracle grow in it which is frustrating. Perlite makes for easier viewing of the eggs and cleaner hatchlings (doesn't stick to babies like vermiculite).
