Outdoor cage, insect concerns?

Getting closer to finishing my outdoor parson enclosure. Just wanted to get anyone's thoughts on critters slipping in through the screen. I used 1/2" galvanized screening because any smaller holes and raccoons could possibly rip through. Also a little worried about them sticking their paws through the holes, but I'll just make sure each night my cham isn't sleeping on the screen. I used to never think of mosquitoes going after reptiles until a member brought it up here and shortly after I noticed one on my cham. Not sure how big of an issue this is. I live in western PA. The only other things I could think of that could cause problems are wasps. Ants are everywhere, but there aren't any venomous or aggressive types. Not sure of any dangerously toxic insects that he could eat. Anything else I should be on the look at for?

I’m in the process of planning a large outdoor enclosure, I was planning on using the 1/4 inch PVC coated fencing on an outer layer, and the usual screen layer under that. Trying to prevent varmints getting in and feeders escaping. Didn’t even think of mosquitos getting in. But the layer of normal screening would prevent that as well.

I was going to use that 1/4 inch, but was told raccoons could pretty easily rip through it. What kind of screen are you using underneath?

Just regular window screen. Creates a double layer. Outside heavy gauge, and in the inside (about a 1 inch gap), screening.

Wow! That’s a good size. Mine would be only for a panther, I was thinking a mobile looking planter box with a cage top attached. I figured the cage would be 3x3x4 or 5. Put a hibiscus tree in there and then plant the hell out of it.

I was thinking something similar for my Panthers. I made this one out of pvc so nothing fancy. Wanted it to be easy to make and move. Trying to keep my Parsons in there full time during the summer so he can get some serious growth(they do much better outside from what I've seen). Just finishing the door and figuring out the misting situation.

I usually use a zoomed screen cage for outdoor time. Then I just spray the whole cage with a garden hose (gentle spray). My chameleon hates it, but it works. My problem is a new construction house with zero trees for shade. It’s been way too hot lately for much outdoor time. I’ve got big plans for the back yard starting now, and my wife will not approve anything for outside, we’ll, inside either, unless it is as beautiful as the house. I figured a large redwood planter box with a well planted cage on top would be ok...I hope.

I do the same thing for my Panthers. Sometimes I just set the hose on mist and aim it towards the cage on hot days. It's been almost 100 every day here lately so I havent brought them out much.

Hey at least your wife approves if it looks good... mine doesnt approve of anything lol

@Goose502 off topic, but since you mentioned a large caiman lizard paludarium awhile back. I have been obsessing over these guys. I've wanted a tegu, and they are basically water tegus. If you ever go through with that let me know how it goes.

For sure. I’ve had a small obsession with this species since I first saw them years ago. They seem hardy, but apparently are supceptable to neuro issues that originate from water quality. I’ve always wanted to dive into South American freshwater fish species as well, this kind of kills two birds with one stone. Biggest drawback is the cost of coarse. I’ve casually priced out acrylic for the build, it will be quite the investment.

I love their looks. Like an alligator crossed with a tegu, plus some color. And so much opportunity for an awesome enclosure. Dream build for sure
