hello everyone. i have many reptiles. beared dragon, 3 morph leopard geckos, 9 firebelly toads, 7 anoles, crested gecko, and 2 oklahoma tree frogs.
all that said i know a bit about reptiles besides chameleons. we meaning myself, wife, and son. have really wanted a chameleon for some time now and i have heard there a little different than any lizard. the housing ive heard mixed to use glass or screen enclosers. as for me i like the screen enclosers. we have cats so i dont know how that works out with the screen and all. all our others have a screen tops and all the cats seem to do is sleep on them. mainly on the beardies encloser do to the heat. anyways heres the Q's
whats the best set up to house one in
which chameleon to chose we like the panther, jackson, veiled
temp for the encloser
temp for basking
uvb 2.0, 5.0, or 10.0
the humidity range
anything ive left out please fill in.
thanks

Welcome to the forums:cool:

Well Panthers an veiled chams have very similar care an both are beginning hardy chams with the proper set up....jacksons need cooler temps an higher humidity...so its just your preference;)

definately Uvb 5.0 (2.0 to little and 10.0 too much...so 5.0=just right;p)

veiled/panthers humidity 40-60%/70-90 degreesF is fine...Jacksons 50-80%/68-85 degrees F humidity

basking veiled/panther-max is 90 degrees F, but i keep it alittle cooler like 85-88....and JAcksons- basking heat- max 85 but better 80-82..IMO

all chams at night sleep an no lights neede...temps can be 60-70 degrees F....

hope this helps...an o your own research an check threads on this forums and also ask away..we r here tto help.

I use a reptibreeze and I like it very much. http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog...ile-cages-and-vivariums/screen-reptile-cages/ It comes in all different sizes depending on what type of cham, age and size of cham you start out with. I wouldn't use the starter kits because you're paying for a lot of stuff you don't need like substrate and plastic plants. Most people put in a large plant and maybe some fake vines. I use all live because it's good for humidity.

we really like the jackson cause of the horns. with all the reptile enclosers around the house and a reef tank. i was think like a 24" to 36" long and like 18" to 24" deep. how high i was thinking like 24". would it be better to go with no substrate to like ecoearth
sorry im all over the place

I have a male 2.5 yo (had him for 2 years) Jackson's and he's amazing with a great temperament and yes the horns are amazing. Like a little dinosaur. I just got a little female which I hope to breed. My male Jackson's free ranges in my living room. https://www.chameleonforums.com/official-enclosure-picture-thread-49688/index2.html. My female is in a 20Hx16x16 reptibreeze as she was tiny when I got her (only three months) I have three sides of the reptibreeze covered with plastic to keep in the humidity. Eventually I'll free range her to when she gets bigger..if I can find a place to keep her away from my male

no worrries...you dont need substrate, can cause your cham to choke or bacteria growth when damp....u can use paper towels , its easier to clean:cool:

Jackons are awsome..an im guessing a male too for the horns....ask "JAxyGirl" and another member "cantgetagoodsn"..both own jacksons and are really helpful....hope this helps...also ask away for more questions..thats why we r here. to share and help:cool:

I would eventually go with the 24x24x48. Jackson's are very active for their size. My male is 11" and moves around a lot. The best thing is to get the largest cage you can afford. The only problem is that if you start with a baby under 5 mos old they are so small it can be a problem for them to find their feeders that's why I have a smaller enclosure for my female.

i dont feel we should have a problem finding feeders. with many lizards and frogs we keep 2 different sizes of crickets plenty of mealworms and superworms on hand. we like to buy bulk.

paper towels it is. handeling. do you handel them much. whats the best way to enteract with them

let them get a ajusted to his home for a couple weeks...then try hand feeding , and let him come out of his cage on his own..the try introducing your hand or a stick...jackons are known to be calm an chill...but like all chams there is always an expection and you mite end up with an aggresive cham ,an just leave him alone...until for vet checks and cleaning his cage....

once he is ok with you on you hand...only handle a few times a week for 10-15 minutes....

where would be the best place to get one. around here everyone seems to have the veild. if ordering do they handel shipping well

for jacksons...i woul go for flchams:cool: they are good an only heard great reviews from them..shipping as well

ok well change of plans our son likes the veileds cause of the colors patterns
any difference on temperment on male or female also what about housing

haha:p....well veiled males are easier than female cuz of the egg laying process (they lay infertile eggs)....but veileds are known to b a bit aggressive...some cham owners get lucky and have calm veields...i was actually glad you were getting a jacksons,,very mellow species...but to each their own:cool:.....so screen cage and set up is the same...flchams has some veileds too....still iwould recommend them and ask any questions via email or phone...

with time are they more mellow or do most always have a temper

it all depends on personality...im not saying all veileds are lke that and with trust exercises, it will help..like hand feeding, letting him explore outside his cage on his own..until when you can use your hand or a stick to hold him...i had a veiled...and he gets mean, but once he is on your hand they strangely calm down:)....
