New to Pygmy Chameleons - A few questions

Hey Guys,

So Ive recently gotten back into the reptile world after having to exit due to living in residence during my first year at University. That said, now with more time, money, and space Ive fallen in love with pygmy chameleons. But before I commit to them I want to make sure I understand everything I need to keep them.

The first thing I want to ask you guys about is my set up. Its a 12x12x18 exoterra.

How does it look from a chameleon's perspective?

Are there enough branches?

Is there enough places to hide?

Ive read conflicting views on the use of UV lights and basking spots. Do pygmy's need/should they have the UV? Will they use a basking spot?

My understanding is that the temp should be stay between 65 (night) and 75 (day), is this right?

What should the humidity range be?

I had settled on getting bearded pygmies but when I called up the place where im buying them from they also had kenyan pygmies available. Unfortunately Ive found only limited information about the kenyans. Is their care basically the same? Which of the two species is more rewarding to keep?

Finally, I was originally planning on getting only a single chameleon but learned that theyre social animals. That said, if I were to get a male and female.... and if they were to mate... if I just left the eggs in the terrarium would they be ok? Or should I just forget that possibility and get two females?

Thanks guys!

I'm not really sure, since I'm not a chameleon, but I like it LOL

Are there enough branches?
I'd put in some twigs or thin branches as highways

Is there enough places to hide?
Oh yeah! Nice job there.

Ive read conflicting views on the use of UV lights and basking spots. Do pygmy's need/should they have the UV? Will they use a basking spot?
I use an old Exoterra 5.0, or a new 2.0. I feel they need the UV, so I've always provided it. As for a basking spot, I always hear that they don't need it, but I have one pretty high up from the top of their enclosure, and they sometimes climb to the highest branch to get close to it. Good or bad? I don't know, but that's what I do.

My understanding is that the temp should be stay between 65 (night) and 75 (day), is this right?
Yup. That's about right. You can go to probably 78 in the day.

What should the humidity range be?
Mine's always between 55 and 75 +/-

I've only ever had brevs, so I can't help you there. The care might be a bit different for Kenyans.

Finally, I was originally planning on getting only a single chameleon but learned that theyre social animals. That said, if I were to get a male and female.... and if they were to mate... if I just left the eggs in the terrarium would they be ok?
I leave mine in the enclosure, and every now and again babies show up. I don't watch the females lay, and my enclosure is heavily planted, so I only see the babies when they come up to the top after they hatch. I don't count days, so SURPRISE!

Or should I just forget that possibility and get two females?
Getting one male and one female puts a lot of pressure on the female to breed. That is what I did the first time I got pygmies. I've had a 1.1 pair, a 1.3 group, a 1.2 group, and now a 0.2 group. Two females would be fine, but of course you won't get babies if you don't get one that isn't already pregnant. I have 2 females right now, and everything seems ok with them. I've got eggs cooking in the enclosure from before my male died.

Thanks guys!

I hope that helps!

Hi Mavrick, Ive quite a few species of pygmies they are great little chams WC can be a bit delicate thou. Totally agree with what Lisa has said, if you go for kenyans (Kerstenii) they are the same as Brevs for their care but can take it slightly warmer & drier. All the best with whatever you choose Heatherxxx
