Hi all,
This is my first time in the forum and I would like to say WOW, it's great to see so many people who are passionate about chameleons! Myself I am a proud owner of 2 bearded dragons (and about 600 cockroaches:)). a month ago I was in the pet store killing some time when I came across the first chameleon I have ever seen. Needless to say I fell in love with it right then and there. The little guy came right up to the glass and was trying to come see me. So, after letting him crawl around on me for 15 mins I decided that I have to have one! Anyways I'm here to aquire information about, well....everything. Species, housing, diet, care, feeding, enclosures... I take pride in providing an ideal habitat for my reptiles, so I am here to learn from the masters. I plan on aquiring my first chameleon this fall, or possibly sooner if I feel I can properly accomodate it. I would like to get a full grown or near full grown Chameleon. I see this forum is thousands of pages deep so I would like to post a few questions I have about chameleons and apologize if they have been asked in the past.

  1. In terms of enclosures, is screen/mesh the best? For a full size chameleon what dimensions should I aim for?
  2. I noticed a smaller chameleon with 3 horns, jacksons I think it was, are there full grown chameleons with horns as well?
  3. What do you suggest for breed? I am into size and colour but would be willing to make sacrafices for personality and life span.
  4. My dragons are very friendly and social, I handle them 2 or 3 times a day. Are chameleons social in that sense? Could I have them hang out on my shoulder while I watch a movie for example.
  5. Are there automatic devices to control humidity? Misters or something like that?
  6. I read they only drink running water, is a waterfall required for the enclosure?
  7. I noticed alot of enclosures built around small house plants, is this best or will fake vines and branches be enough?
  8. My dragons get a 24/7 buffet of certain vegetables, are vegetables part of a chameleons diet?
  9. I have supplements for my dragons, calcium with D3 and multivits, will these be ok for the chameleon?
  10. I use 10.0 tube lights for my dragons, do chameleons require these as well? What about a heat lamp for basking?

Sorry to list so many questions, I just want to get all the info I can from the experts. I don't trust pet stores:p
Cheers,
Stu

Welcome to the forum!
what type of chameleon is it that you want? the type of cage (construction and size) will depend on type of chameleon and the environment where you live (temperature, humidity). Most people start with a panther or veiled chameleon.
Yes, full grown jackson chameleons have horns.
An adult veiled or panther would do well in a 2 foot wide, 2 foot deep, four foot high cage.
Generally speaking, chameleon are NOT social - they are typically "look but not touch" animals. Some tolerate handling more than others.
Yes, there are auto misters available. You may not need one.
A waterfall is a bad idea. Drippers and spray/misting is the better way to provide hydration.
Some chameleons will eat vegetation, others dont. Typically veileds do.
What brand of supplements? do you also have plain calcium (without D3)?
Chameleons do need a UVB tube, and the Reptisun 5.0 tube is the most recommended.
Yes, a basking light is needed. A normal 40-100 watt household tungsten incandscent bulb is fine (Wattage depends on the temp of the room and how close/far the bulb is from the basking spot, as well as the type of chameleon).
