Hi all, im new to the forum, but have been reading it for the last two weeks for everyones info. I pretty much had a panther chameleon thrown at me yesterday morning. I wont say names on who I purchased it from, but it wasnt anyone on here, I dont think. It was a wholesaler of a bunch of different animals. So monday evening I called this guy up on his add he had somewhere else. I decided against my better judgement to go ahead and purchase the animal on a couple conditions. 1; he had to hold it for me until the cage and supplies arrived to my house first. I told him they would be here by the weekend and that I'd call him up after to talk about which day to ship. I told him this before and after I purchased it from him. Second I wanted a male Nosy Be. He said both conditions were fine and he'd wait for my call to ship. So yesterday morning I decided to not buy from him because I was very worried about how good this Nosy Be would be with it being so cheap. So I called and left him a message telling him I wanted to cancel the purchase for so many reasons. Well about a half hour after that message I hear my door knock and low and behold there was the panther. I've tried to call this guy a hundred times so far because I was very angry at how he did his buisness, but he wont return my calls. I half to overnite a screened cage to put him in. Now this little guy is very cute and even though im still very angry about it I've decided to try to keep him. Ive got him on a jade plant with a 75 watt basking bulb on him till everything comes in. Now he has been drinking pretty good, but he hasnt ate yet. I have pinheads and fruitflies but nothing has helped yet. He also seems to be having some red showing inside one of his eyes. Is there anything I can do for the eye or getting him to eat? Or am I doing everything I can right now? Im sorry for such along post but I wanted everyone to know the whole story to try and help me save this little guy.

Hi Matt,

Welcome. I dont know how much help I can be but I just wanted to say you are definitely in the right place.

If he is a baby, I am thinking he would probably be ok in a 10 gallon for a couple of days until the cage comes. Just makes sure water doesn't accumulate on bottom too long and not to put a high watt bulb on it (it could roast him) This is assuming you have a 10 gallon (I know I have like 10...I see them at garage sales and buy them thinking some day I may need it..I haven't yet :) ) I would be worried about letting him free range being so small, and in a tank at least he will have easier access to food. Good luck and I would love to see pictures!

You can also keep him in a rubbermaid tub with paper towels on the bottom and some fake greenery in the middle or use a plant as long as it doesn't go to the edge so he can crawl out. More important then the basking light is a UV bulb. Do you have one?

Be sure to go to the How To Ask For Help stickie in the (I think it's the medical) place and you can get all kinds of information on chameleons.

As far as the UV bulb, its supposed to be here no later than monday. Do you guys think he'll be O.K. till then?

That is great you got the cage! Have fun decorating! look through pictures here to get some good interior decorating tips :) I agree that gut instincts are normally right...But I would watch his eye closely and make sure he is cleaning it when you mist him. I would also probably become acquainted with a vet in your area and maybe take him for a checkup. But even though you aren't thrilled with his buisness...just feel good that you gave the little guy a good home! He is probably happy to be in your care :) Is this your first chameleon?? If so good luck and you are defiantly at the right place!

I would think it is probably ok, but is there a pet store in town...the bulbs need to be changed every 6 months, so it isn't a bad idea having an extra lying around. What type of UVB did you order?

I assumed the same thing too :)

Hey thanks for the help all. Yea I did get little guy from the 99 dollar place but no dot on him that I have seen. I'll surely try to post some pics. as soon as I can. I new I shouldnt have bought him, I even told Justin that . Thats why I tried to cancel it so I could buy one from Sunshine Chameleons. Im not even sure he's the right locale or the right sex. Man this dude sure got one over on me thats for sure. I'll try to get those pics up today or tom. The eye is all red around the irus, kind of like a busted blood vessel. He is in his cage right now a 16x16x30 for now. I'll get the big cage down the rode. I think im gonna get a UV and a stronger baking bulb tonight. Havent taken the temps since I got him in the cage but my guess is its not gonna be in between 85 -90 degrees. Gotta go do the christmas party thing tonight, have a good one all, and Justin if you are out there, Thanks alot man.

Matt, the ambient temp should be in the 70's or low 80's His basking spot should be no more then 90 with plenty of cool spots down below in the leaves of your plants. Please, no waterfalls or substrate. The very best thing to put on the bottom if you wish is paper towels to help absorb your overspray when you mist and to make it easy to pick up the poop. A thermometer is a necessity to do this. Depending on the ambient temps in the room a 50 or 75 watt bulb is all you need. Keep the bulbs on for abut 12 hours and then turn them all off. Please be sure to read this. It is a great source of help for all the husbandry issues.

You should do a google for "Fauna Calssifieds BOI"... This is the most used Board of Inquiry for the herping industry. There is plenty of good reading on there about PRL, and the issues people have had with them. I am sure other consumers would appreciate reading your account with them. It really sucks that there are shady characters like this out there waiting to screw people.

This is also not the first time I have heard about Chams coming in with visible defects that were uindisclosed to the buyer prior to shipping.

This forum is for the discussion of chameleon husbandry. Please keep personal and commercial disputes out of the forums.
