My new veiled.

My girlfriend and I just got a 6 month old veiled cham.

When we first purchased her she loved climbing up my jacket and into my hair, now that we have her in her new cage she seems to be a little ticked off at me. When i went to pick her up from her cage so we could clean something she hissed at me and proceeded to smack me with her head..

I'm guessing this is from her not being used to the new environment but I'm not sure. Also this is our first cham. She is very cute and I would like her to be more like she used too but it won't be a big deal as long as she is happy and healthy.

Any advice for a newer cham owner?

is she in a glass tank? if so she might be able to see her reflection which could be agitating her. Screen cages are the way to go. she looks lovely though. :)
 
She is in a glass tank at the moment but were looking to upgrade her very soon! Probably after Christmas we were going to grab a larger tank with more ventilation.
 
Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new chameleon. I keep veileds and I'm attaching a couple of my blogs for your below. The first one is for general care of your cham. It has links with pictures of what all she will need in order to stay healthy and survive along with where you can but these supplies. Most supplies that you need for a chameleon can not be found in your local pet store. The second blog is about egg laying and the laying bin. Females can and very often do lay eggs even witout a male around if they are kept too warm and if you overfeed them. Sometimes they still lay even when you are doing everything correct.

Hi, I totally get you. I have the same situation. The longer my 4-month cham stay in his cage, the more grumpy he becomes.

Veiled are very territorial and can become quite aggressive when caged.

Cammimom, I think the front leg looks like it could have been broke as some point in time. She looks a tad skinny from the back side too.

I thought that might have been what it was. Cuz the legs arent bowed like MBD would do. And it looks similar to what Kinks leg did for a bit when he broke his (least I think he broke it)
ANd I agree, she does look a tad skinny. She needs some big fat waxworms and some hornworms! lol.

To the OP , Veiled Chams are going to be Veiled Chams. lol they tend to be a little on the aggressive side. Just be glad it was just a headbut and not a bite, lol.

Everything that i have read and even with my own Veiled is that they get cage-aggressive. Once they are out the cage they calm down. But try not to take them out just cause. I got a free-range tree (Just a tree outside of his/her cage that they can just roam around on under your supervision.). I'd feed in the morning , let him bask most of the day (they have to get their body temps up to help with food digestion). Then when i get home around 5pm i would take him out handle him for a few minutes , then let him roam around on his free-range tree.

I dont think its MBD. the arms arent bowed or anything. And it doesnt appear to affect the back leg, which if would do it it was MBD. MBD doesnt just strike one leg.
I think the arm was broken at some point, and this is how it healed.
Though she needs to put some weight on.
 
I'm not sure why she would look skinny she has been eating quite a bit! The previous owner said she also ate very well, I'll have to try getting her some waxworms. For now she has been eating at least 8-10 crickets a day.

Thank you very much for these! I'll be printing out the egg laying one! I think we might be a little under prepared for if that happens but I think we will get through it with this!

I think youll be ok on the egg laying! she doesnt look like she has any eggs right now, so you can get her a layin bin and such ready.
Most keepers keep the bin in the cage with them 24/7, so they dont miss signs of needing to lay.
Also, regarding humidity.. you can get a mesh cage, then put shower curtain on 2 sides, this will keep the humidity up. also live plants help with this.

Have you had a fecal done? She could have parasites.
 
As a side note... you have to moderate the amount of food females eat, this can help decrease the size of clutches they lay.
However, I agree with Jannb, you shoulg get a fecal done. she shouldnt look that skinny if shes eating that much.. unless she just laid eggs.

By a fecal do you mean have her poop examined? I'm not sure if this is how much she was eating before we really did just get her, the 17th.
 
Alright I'll have to get in contact with a local vet and see if they will. For now I'll keep feeding her in the morning and maybe only give her about 6-8 crickets! I'll post another picture of her soon see if she looks any better.:D
