I personally would not use the one with menthol in a situation where it could be ingested.
I am a big proponent of essential oils, but some of them have potential issues if ingested. By no means an expert on the issue of menthol-especially in reptiles-but a quick search mentions these potential issues:Why not the menthol?
Thanks! After reading all of this, I think I wouldn't risk it either! Especially since there isn't much known about how a chameleon might react.I am a big proponent of essential oils, but some of them have potential issues if ingested. By no means an expert on the issue of menthol-especially in reptiles-but a quick search mentions these potential issues:
In high doses, menthol side effects may include drowsiness, abdominal pain, convulsions, nausea, vomiting, vertigo, ataxia and coma. For some people, it may cause allergic reactions and symptoms such as headache, flushing or contact dermatitis.
There are calcium channels in cell membranes throughout our bodies, and that is why we can see systemic toxicity after swallowing or inhaling concentrated amounts of menthol. Serious effects include seizures, coma, and death . Menthol can cause eye and skin irritation.
I am not sure that it has specific curative properties enough to risk even the smallest chance of any of the above, who knows what dose would be problematic for chams. If nothing else if the cham wiped it into its eye there would be a lot of burning and irritation. Just being conservative.
