mosquitos?

Chamalot Chameleons
Since it it nice weather now I have been leaving some of the chameleons in outside cages.

We recently moved to a more rural location and I'm finding this summer that the mosquitoes are pretty bad here.

How likely is it for mosquitoes to bother a chameleon? I thought maybe they wouldn't be attracted to a chameleon because of the cold blood..? But on the other hand I doubt mosquitoes discriminate.

The outside cages are all screen but Im sure the little buggers can find away in.

My first thought is, they live in rain forest which have mosquitos and I'm sure other annoying insects. I would just watch and see and if you think it's bothering the cham then you'll now.

everybody hates mosquitos

There are mosquitos that specialize in reptiles and amphibians; they are known to transmit several parasites and a disease or two. I would not leave my animals out overnight if they were in an area with lots of reptiles, and their mosquitos, without positive barriers.

You should screen your cages so they are mosquito-proof. Others in Florida might be able to give you some guidance on how fine the screen must be.

You can treat any small body of water with a product to stop mosquito reproduction. I like the B.t.i. donuts or "Mosquito Bits"; they have a harmless live bacteria that only affects the larvae of mosquitos. Totally safe for birds, reptiles, and people; it only kills the hatefull little suckers. This won't keep them from flying in from the outlying areas, but it helps to keep them from breeding in your yard. You can throw the donuts into neighbors ponds if you have a good arm... :D

The types of mosquitoes that bother warm blooded creatures (Im assuming these are the ones that you're noticing) arent likely to be a big issue for lizards.
