Mommy To Be

Hello, all! I have posted a couple times but for the most part I have been lurking and learning. As I have mentioned on a prior thread, I am experienced with other reptiles (morphed boa constrictors and beardies) however I understand that chams are a whole different ball game. To make sure we can be the best scaled parents, we are waiting at least another month or two before we purchase and bring a cham into our home; longer, if need be.

My husband just joined the forums and is awaiting approval so that we BOTH are prepared. We are custom-building our own enclosure. He will be taking pictures of the progress, design, and he will be actively asking questions to make sure we arrange the best and healthiest set up. There is nothing wrong with store-built but as huge animal lovers, we want the lives of those that we are responsible for to have the most fulfilled and loving experience. After all, it's not just about us enjoying our new family member but for our critters to enjoy their humans. We understand the magnitude of proper husbandry, preparation, and knowledge.

I have gone thru the husbandry and sub sections, printed a lot of information out and created a notebook. We will use this notebook as well to log important dates such as when we use certain supplements, what and when he is fed, when he has vet appointments and any tests w/ diagnosis, etc. I also called our "regular" vet's office for a local exotic vet recommendation. I called the exotic vet, questioned them about the doctor's background and experience with chams, got their info. I was impressed when they told me that regardless of whom I get my little guy from that they recommend I bring him in for an initial exam and they quoted me (for an exotic vet, the pricing was extremely reasonable). So I am happy to say we already have a specific vet lined up and ready to go.

We are making sure that we have EVERYTHING covered, including our knowledge, before we even begin to talk to breeders or purchase a cham. I am looking specifically for a Panther Ambilobe juvenile male. We plan on attending Repticon towards the end of August but if we are not prepared, we will just "window shop". However, as I am about to be a new mommy to cham, I wanted to ask what I should look out for when at the reptile show or with any breeder we may buy from. Are there any specific signs of the onset of a URI or MBD (as well as dehydration, eye issues, etc.) that you experienced parents would suggest I watch out for? What are some good questions to ask other than how they are interacted with and fed? For those that are still reading (sorry it is so long-winded), any advise on what I can do to keep this experience from being traumatizing for our little guy (and us) is very appreciated.

I'm guessing you are talking about the Memphis Repticon so I listed this from their site. I would see if there are any reviews on Fauna Classified BOI http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/index.php?s=7acd14ea18ef9c86c103e966ddc5507d& so you can do some homework before you go. Also, trust your gut. If something doesn't seem right, go somewhere else. Chameleons can hide health issues very well, and ones at reptile shows are definitely under more stress than normal so you may not see the whole picture.

Thank you! Yes, that's the one! I contacted some from the list of vendors that are scheduled to be there however I quickly found out that this list isn't correct/ updated. I contacted a breeder (E2 Exotics) from this list because he is local to Mississippi and he said he wasn't sure why he was listed as attending. Hopefully they will update it soon. Thank you, I will definitely be cautious. It is looking more and more like I will just be window shopping at Repticon. I know all these animals are put under so much stress and are more susceptible to health issues so that makes me even more leery about purchasing a cham at the show. However if I meet a breeder that I get good vibes from, I might ask about a future hatchling.

I just wanted to say how great it is to see someone who is taking their time in purchasing a cham, doing the research, and making sure everything is 100% before jumping in!! I wish I had found this forum before I rescued my baby Peepers!! But hind sight and all..., Anyway please keep us updated, I'm excited to follow you and your chams story!!! Best of luck!!

Thank you :) I have seen what happens when people see an animal they think is "cool" and they buy it on a whim only to have no clue what all is involved in the care. Those scenarios typically end in tragedy :( I will definitely keep the thread updated on our journey. Side note, I am a picture fanatic so when we do get our little man (I even have the name picked out already lol), I will bombard y'all with pictures :)

I am super excited to say that I have found a breeder! They have babies that aren't ready to be adopted yet (which is perfect because we aren't completely set up for him yet) but he will be ready to move in right about the time we are done building his new cham condo :)

I want you all to meet Mr. Proteus! His sire and grand sire pictures are included. We will be getting him in about 3 weeks. We are not quite finished with his castle (his cage we are building is 2' deep, 3' wide, and 4' tall which will sit on a 3' tall base for storage) so the breeder is being a doll and keeping him for us a wee bit longer. His cage is almost complete and we have two live plants growing for him, one for free roaming and the other to go inside his "castle". We still need to get good climbing branches and vines, make his "waterfall" drinking fountain, his dripper system, and get his basking and UVB/UVA lamp, and start a colony of feeders. My husband @J.Bauer is also working on the drainage system and substrate. Once Proteus gets his first class plane ticket, we will set up his first vet visit as well to make sure the plane trip wasn't too hard on the guy. I can't wait!

Today the hubs is hard at work on Proteus' castle. He has added the doors and he is painting it now. Next he will add the screens. In the background of the cage you can see the base being built that it will sit on and plants that will be included inside. We are thinking about getting an umbrella plant as well due to the cage's size. I picked out the swirly knobs because they remind me of Cham tails lol. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Cage is complete, mister on the way, Arcadia arrives tomorrow, and Mr. Proteus officially arrives Thursday of next week! RB Barto was a doll and sent me pictures he took of him today. Squeeeee! He was hatched 5/17 so he is just starting to show a little green (and pissed off personality by some of the pictures lol!) The husband is taking the day off that he arrives so he can immediately pick him up from the hub and immediately get him into his new castle. Can you say, excited? I think he will have some nice red in his tail. :D:D:D:D:love::love::love:
