Locust biting my chameleon?

Hi, do locusts bite? I looked in the terranium and there was one attached to my chams leg! He was not happy about it & had gone dark grey-green and hissy. I managed to knock the locust off & then he hissed and went all puffy & stripey. I had heard that crickets can bite them, but I'd been told that locusts wouldn't.
I took him out and he went back to his normal green, his leg looks like it has a small mark on it.

Hmm not too sure i think they could bite its just they generally dont, i would think they would start eating ur plant first? Do u have live plants in your cage? I've left one in there without noticing only noticed bite marks in my ficus! Thought zuggie was eating it! Then got up next morning and there it was munching on the same leaf ! Never touched zugs tho...

Yes they can and will chew on a chameleon.

I would treat the area with some triple anti-biotic ointment(not cream).

He should be fine.

I haven't got any live plants in there, I guess maybe they think mr neelix is a nice leaf! They do seem to be trying to eat the plastic leaves. Oh well, no damage done, it looks. Aside from having an angry chameleon whose being harrassed by them. Hopefully he'll solve the problem for himself and hurry up and eat them.

Id recommend you dont leave them in there unsupervised for long periods of time.

How many are you releasing in the enclosure?

Getting live (cham safe) plants will solve several problems at once. They help keep humidity levels up, they provide climbing space and places to hide for the cham, and they also drink droplets from the leaves when you mist.

As far as locusts are concerned, yes, they do bite! I have been on the receiving end myself having been bitten by an extra large one (thankfully it wasn't a full grown one with wings)! It left a couple of red marks on my finger and I felt it too! If you gutload them first with leafy greens they will be less inclined to try and eat anything else, including Neelix. :D I LOVE that name, I always wanted a Panther cham that I would call Neelix, but as yet I haven't got one.

Ah cool! you're only across the water from me, I live in Southampton/New Forest.

Neelix comes from Star Trek, I'm a bit of trekkie.

I thought about putting in real plants but I'm worried about looking after them. I'm fine with animals but I ALWAYS kill plants off. But I'll certainly have a look, as I've noticed chameleon shaped teeth marks on the plastic leaves too.

Best to get some real ones then if Neelix is nibbling the plastic! I don't have much luck with plants either but you can't go wrong with Schefflera really. You can buy quite large ones at B&Q and Lidl also have some on offer occasionally. It's nice to see someone nearer to home on here!:D

I couldnt watch more than 5 episodes because of Neelix!

I HATE his character! lol

The first episode had me soooo stoked! Then came annoying Neelix, time after time, ruining the show for me. ;/

I admit, Neelix was not my favorite character... but he was not a Jar Jar Binks for me. Jar Jar killed the new Star Wars. I dunno Neelix was alright. I did not dislike him...

LOL, ok, Ill give you that. ;)

Im a huge fan of the originals, and TNG. Couldnt get into any of the others. Maybe I should have given them more time though.
