i have a small senegal cham. my first. she is in a small 15"x15"x20" cage ATM. i want to get her a larger tank soon. i was looking in LLL reptile and they have what they call a Reptarium screen cage. the cages frame is plastic bars and the screen just slides over it. can this be used as a perment cage or do i just need to get the alum cage. thanks

I will try to offer a bit of detail about both types of cages... I would say a few things in defense of reptariums. They are AWESOME outdoor cages. To be able to take your chameleon out of its indoor cage, and put it in a reptarium on a warm day, or a rainy summer day, soak the entire cage down and let them get natural sun is awesome. Breeders love them, we love them, and they are a great cage for that. They are also fantastic cages for someone looking to set their chameleon up properly, but are on a tighter budget. You can get a 65 gallon reptarium for $29.99 right now on sale. Tough to get that size screen cage for that price. The downside of reptariums is the black nylon screen, and the longevity of the cage itself, as they do wear down over time. It is darker than our aluminum cages, making it more difficult to see your chameleon (although, at the same time, making your chameleon WAY less stressed, as it can't see as well out of the cage either). If you want a clean, clear display cage for your cham - the aluminum screen cages are best. If you want a cage that you can use easily outside, and provides your cham with a bit more privacy, reptariums are great, and do the job. They definitely have a purpose for chameleon keepers! Hope that info helps a bit :) Enjoy the senegal cham!

I have used the reptariums indoors and outdoors. I currently am keeping a male in one permanently. He likes it because he is shy. I have another shy guy I am thinking of putting in another one of my reptariums.

The only down side I see is if you don't treat the zippers well but like to yank them around.

I personally don't like reptariums... poor visibility, crappy zippers, will melt from a basking lamp and general flimsy construction. on the plus side they are machine washable!
