I went to my local pet shop here in town looking for a 48" UBV bulb because I have a ballast that I can use for that size light. I told him it was for the chameleon I purchased off him a few months ago and he offered me a 48" Zoo Med Reef Sun 50/50 fluorescent bulb. Now I didn't buy it because he seems like a shady character and I wasn't sure if thats good for chameleons. He told me thats the best lights for them. What do you guys think?

I'm looking online and can't find much that says it has UBV either. And if I find out that this guy is feeding me a load of bullshit just to sell his products I'm going to snap! lol He told me if I used those lights that it's the best thing for chameleon's. Lucky I didn't buy them, he was charging like three times as much as there actually worth.

I think that is just plain stupid.
He does not know about reptiles or evidentally reef tank lighting either. LOL!
A reef sun is not for reptiles. It has actinic light out-put.
Emphasis on a whole different spectral range...
and MOST un-natural for ANY terrestrial lighting application.

Question... he sold you a Cham with out setting you up with correct lighting?

You have an example of someone who is suppose to be a professional and making money off you WORKING TO KILL YOUR PET.

Do not walk, RUN away from that evil Bozo the clown.

Cheers!

I already had the set up for my chameleon before I bought the chameleon, all the proper lights, cage, food, ect. I built a new cage because he was getting bigger and I was looking for a bigger light set up. Thats why I went there because I was looking for 48" UBV bulbs and knowone else in town would help me. I didnt buy them because I didn't no anything about them at the time. Thats why I posted on here to find out.

Yes...and you did the right thing!
And good thing you already knew about Chams, CBCAMO.
So you knew something just wasn't right with what he was telling you.
:D

Imagine if you were a total newbie and had taken his advice ? !?
In a relatively short time you would have had a stunted sickly cham on its way out suffering from MBD.

And yes.. yes...I know anyone can make an honest mistake and give advice that misses the mark.
I am still learning things every day too!

But what he was recommending to you was SO FAR off the mark...

that it just boggled my mind.

What struck me in this example was not only does he sound poorly educated on reptile lighting.
(And remember: it is his Job and responsibility to be at least somewhat competent since he is dispensing advice as an authority figure and professional and (animals) lives depend on it.)

But it appears he also did not "get" what a 50/50 light was designed for as far as reef tanks were concerned either.
IE: what the "50/50" meant as far as that light's spectrum was concerned and what it was designed to simulate.
Because if he knew what the spectrum that reef tank lamp is trying to recreate - he would have known what a poor choice that would be for a terrestrial animal set up in the first place.

So in my book that's a Double Whammy.

(having owned 2 pet stores in the past 30 years, I have a low tolerance for that sort of thing.)

Cheers!:D
And best of luck.
Sincerely,
Todd

It goes way beyond that man, he's also a crook, trying to charge me $50.00per bulb and trying to sell me a bunch of stuff that I don't need for triple the price. I'm just glad I rescued my chameleon from that asshole. He's going to get whats coming to him.

Aquarium lights are designed to simulate sun filtered through over 100ft of water. They are normaly 10k or actinic(blue pink) colored and not meant for normal plants or animals.
