I have it mounted around 7 or 8 inches from the top of the cage. I have a veiled female chameleon around 6 or 7 weeks old.

Howdy,

I don't recall the Repti-Glo 5.0 CFL as having any non-terresterial spectral content (a dangerous situation) like some of the other ones have had in the past. That basically leaves you with figuring out what height to position it to deliver a safe level of UVB. If you had access to a Solarmeter 6.2 then you could easily set the height such that you were in the range of ~10-50uW/cm2 at the basking spot. If you were in SoCal, I'm sure one of us could come over and help with a measurement. Maybe someone is nearby where you live that owns a meter? Remember, fixtures can almost double the amount of UVB reaching the basking spot and screen material will often reduce the UVB (and overall light as well) by ~25% so take that into account.

In my UVB article, I have an example (the 3rd photo from the end) of an 8 month-old 26W Repti-Glo CFL in a shiny fixture, aimed through screen, measured at 6", producing 22uW/cm2. That is a reasonable UVB level to shoot for. There are a lot of variables (horzontal or vertical socket etc.) so it is always best to measure it with a Solarmeter 6.2 if you can.
