Is this an adequate cage?

Hi,

I have kept chameleons (veiled and jacksons) before and I want to have one again. Unfortunately I sold all my cages I had and the only cage I have left is this bird cage. Could this cage be adapted to keep a chameleon? Either veiled or jackson?

I know that chameleons need cages that are tall as opposed to long like this one but I want to know if this would be sufficient. I would rather have a jackson as I would like to keep him outdoors year long, I am in SoCal.

The cage is aluminum and it is approximately 45" long.

Ya that would probably work pretty well.
Definitely keep some shade in mind in that though, they'll need to escape the heat somehow.

Feeders on the other hand is where you might have some issues, just search up some cricket jug feeders, should solve your problems.

Thank you, I intend to put lots of plants inside plus the cage has a long piece of aluminum in the middle of the roof, that provides plenty of shade. As far as feeders I feed them dubias in a glass bowl, that way they can not climb and escape. I also I used to give them silkworms and hornworms.

To be able to say it is adequate I need to know how long, wide as well as the height you provided. I would have a fear that the metal at the top would get way too hot. Having lived in soc cal, it can get way hot in the sun and that kind of heat in a cage would be a problem. And a jackson could notdeal with that kind of heat. Yes they live in Hawaii and it is hot, but I have never seen a jackson with a beach condo. I just can't see how you could maintain the required humidity or cool them outside in so cal. Sorry jmo

I have had Jacksons in the past and I think that cage might work. One thing I would think about is the spacing of the wire, I bet a Jacksons would have no problem walking right through it Attaching some window screen material or something similar would fix that.

yeah dude you could just put on some screening around and silicone/tie it some how so crickets cant escape and boom

Thank you everyone. The cage is 48" long x 30" high by 26" deep and the space in the wires are 1" x 2 1/4". I think a smallish jackson might be able to find its way out but not a veiled.

I do agree that the humidity might be a challenge to maintain. Would a veiled be able to live outdoors in SoCal. Winter is approaching and at night it can get mighty cold.

Also, I don't worry about crickets getting out as I don't use crickets as feeders.
