How to ask for help

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is some recommended information to include when asking for help in the health clinic forum. By providing this information, you will receive more accurate and beneficial responses. It might not be necessary to answer all these questions, but the more you provide the better. Please remember that even the most knowledgeable person can only guess at what your problem may be. Only an experienced reptile veterinarian who can directly examine your animal can give a true diagnosis of your chameleon's health.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.
Current Problem - The current problem that you are concerned about.

Pictures are helpful

Honestly, he doesn't look too good. This looks serious. How long has he looked like this?

Are you using that Halogen lamp you recommended in that other thread? That may be the problem.

cage info

cage type-combo, dimensions: 18l 10w 20h i am getting a bigger and fully screened cage soon

lighting-zoo-med 5.0 linear i turn on the lights at 7 and turn off a 7
and i am using a 100 watt regular house bulb but i turned it off and the dark colorations went away and as sonn i tunrd it back on the colorations on the side came back

temp-basking is 90F and the rest is 75F
the lowest overnight is 70f i measre with a analog thermometer

humididity-i mist 4 times a day and i measure with a analog hygrometer
after i mist it is around 90% and after it dries out it is around 50%

plants-I have a dwarf schleffara but it is too big to put in the tank so i am going to walmart to buy pothos

placement-the cage is in my room farthest away from my bed and is around 2 and a 1/2 feet off the floor

location-orlando florida (when the temps are good i take him outside to bask)

chameleon info:

your chameleon- veiled chameleon, male, i dont know the age. i have had him for two weeks

handling-i dont handle him unless i am taking him outside

feeding-crickets and giant mealworms(treat). i give him 4-5 crickets a day and 1 meal worm. i gut load the crickets with rice crispies and kale, dandelion greens, potatoes or turnip greens

supplements- rep-cal with out D3 (because i take him outside almost every day) dusted almost every feeding and repcal multivitamins once a month

watering-I mist 4 times a day for 30 seconds and i am going to male a dripper

fecal description- i havent checked it yet but i am waiting for the next one

history- i bought my cham from a guy on craigslist who didnt have time for him and i am currently using everything he gave me

current problem-closes his eyes once in a while (and i dont think is blinking) during the day and shows shadowy markings on his bottom half of his body when the light is on

Do you have him in a tank? If so-he needs to be out of there. Analog thermometers are garbage-and your bulb is too hot. Turn off the heat lamp until you get a digital thermometer-you might be suprised at how hot it is in there. UVB bulbs only last 6-9 months-so you may be due for a new one.

his cage is screen at the bottom front and screened on the top. i will be purchasing a new cage soon and will purchase a new flourescent bulb in december (i dont know how long he has been with the on he is in) mean while i will be taking him outside to bask as much as he is able to. i will be purchasing a digital thermometer/hygrometer and a lower wattage bulb today

Make that dripper happen fast. Looks sick/dehydrated. The eyes are sunken.
Dont know what the odd 'shadow' is, well worth a vet checkup.
:)

Do you mean that the coloration on the side nearest to the heat bulb turns darker and the side away from the heat stays the same? If so, your cham is trying to absorb more heat by darkening his skin. It is a normal behavior. Once the cham warms up the color should return to normal.

But, I agree, your cham doesn't look the best right now. It is a bit too hot for him (and he could get burned if he gets too close). Probably too dry as well. Dehydration can kill, so spray more or get the dripper set up. Drippers in themselves don't raise cage humidity much. That's what hand spraying is for, and the more leaf surfaces there are the more moisture the cage can provide.

yes those eyes look bad... look at his urate if its orange hes definatly dehydrated...try to get a siringe and hand drip water into his mouth... he needs imidiate atention.

your cage temp should be 85 degrees...during the day. if you have a glass cage with only a top ventaltion you need to make sure it doesent get to hot

Actually 90 is fine, if you're measureing with a digital thermometer and he's older than 9 months. However, I'd try to up the mistings by making them longer. He probably should see a vet though. They could do a lot more, quicker.
