Is peat moss safe to repot plants with?

I'm receiving my first panther cham in a few days and was going to put a dwarf schefflera in with him and repot it. I couldn't find any organic soil at the store with out fertilizer in it so i picked up some peat moss. So should that that be safe or should I also put some river stones over the moss? I am also a bonsai collector and have tons of ficus and dwarf schefflera's so he should have fun in them also.

Absolutly wat camimom said mine eats it on purpose little booger.
And thays gonna hold alot of moisture and with the frequent mistings is not gonns go well. I recommend a 60/40 of organic soil and sand topped off with river rock.. works well for.me :)

Thanks for the replies, I'll go ahead and get some river stones to put on top of the soil. I may just go ahead and just use my bonsai soil mix to repot as it drains very well then i don't have to worry about root rot.
