Incubation APS?

Any one have good success using aquatic pond soil for incubation?

Nobody that I know of, but why would you....?

there are tons of established incubating medium in the herp industry...

some use perlite (not a fan myself)

the "standard" is vermiculite

or trademarked "Hatchrite" seems ok too

all easy to get and cheap

I have heard a lot of good reviews of this stuff in the gecko community in comparison to what you have named and most that talked about it have switched over to APS from perlite or vermiculite and hatch rite is just pre wet perlite . I was just wondering if any one has used it over here.


It does not mold , stays moist for months , and is reusable if washed properly unlike the others. I think Ill be using this if I stop using coco.

you currently use coco as an incubation media? I have thought of this but since my incubating experience is limited (and my initial tries have failed using coco) I have switched to the "standards"

I admit my experience is thoroughly limited on the breeding front. I hadn't heard of anyone using the aquatic soil.....

you mentioned gecko community...is there anything distinct about gecko eggs that might like that in particular?


I don't know the science of egg incubation/development...perhaps someone who knows more can comment on the benefits of a "rock like" vs "soil like" incubating medium? More aeration in exchange for less consistent temps? Other changes?


it is an interesting, perhaps under-explored, avenue for how important it really is...

APS is more like perlite texture than soil. Looks very similar.

I actually use coco for everything. I don't know what I would do with out it. I use it in my laying bins, incubation for chameleons and geckos, plants, cage substrates for chameleons and geckos. So its just what I use for everything.

Reason Id like to switch over for incubating possibly is Id like to maybe see the eggs incubating instead of burying them and I didn't really want to use perlite or vermiculite either.
