In your opinion...

Hi, I'm new here, and just recently my chameleon, Henry, has passed away. He was a Veiled Chameleon and lived for a good six and a half years. We would give him calcium regularly, calcium with D3 a couple times a month, and gutloaded crickets with mealworms everyday. He was misted three times a day with a drip system that was always avaliable. He had a UVB light, a heat lamp, and because it gets very cold at night in the winter, a red heat lamp. He had a large cage with three live plants in it and many vines to climb on.

About a month before he died he started to hang upside down on his branches and vines, so we took him to the vet to see if there was something that was causing him to do this. The vet said that everything checked out and that he was fine. I also took him to the pet store that we usuallly go to because the owner also has owned many chameleons and is quite knowledgeable. He was surprised that henry had lived so long as we were first time chameleon owners and said that we should try feeding him a pinky mouse. He refused to eat it. Then, a couple days before he died he would scratch around the dirt of the plants in his cage and he refused to eat. I tried putting him up in one of his trees in hope that he would stay up there and everything would be okay. The day before he died he would close his eyes a lot during the day and breath through his mouth so we decided to take him to the vet the next day as that was when the next open appointment was. Unfortunately, when I checked on him the morning of the appointment he was dead.

I just want your opinion on if you think he died from old age, or if it was because he was sick.

6 1/2 years is a good life. It sounds like old age to me, but a necropsy might have told you for sure. It sounds like you had him set up correctly.
