After three stressful days, my female panther chameleon finally laid her first infertile clutch of eggs. I always have a home depot bucket of laying soil in her setup with her at all times, so I was astonished when I saw a small white egg at the bottom of her cage, next to the bucket. I thought, maybe, it was just the one egg and she didn't have any more in her, but then it happened three more times the next day. The lay box is perfectly set up and the soil isn't too moist, dry, compact, loose, whatever, so I'm sure it was just her...I could tell that she was getting exhausted and very dehydrated, so I kept putting her in the bucket every hour, so maybe she would get the hint and lay them in there. Every time, she would climb out of her lay bin and refuse to lay her eggs.
When I got home from lecture on the third day, I finally found her digging in the dirt. At this point, I was relieved that she wasn't stupid or doing this to give me a heart attack (I am very fearful of her getting egg bound). After she finished, I dug up 18 small white/yellow eggs for a total of 22. She is now drinking and eating properly again, and I'm very grateful her first lay went successfully.
Other than that, should I be expecting more infertile eggs within the next couple months? How often is she going to be stressing me out like this?
