I have a rescued 8 mo old veiled male (Xerxes). I just got him within the last week, but I've had significant reptile experience. I've got him set up in a 4'x2'x2' wire cage which sits on a 2'6" stand so at the top @ his basking spot he's ~6.5' off the ground and the temp is 90-93 with 65-70 at the bottom. He has a UVB strip and a heat light. I'm feeding a mix of dubias and crickets.
Here's my problem: I bought a petsmart thermostat/hydrometer that constantly reads b/t 25-35%, obviously this is way low. This seems impossible because I mist the cage 4x/day at minimum, and he has a dripper for 6 hr/day. I even purchased a humidifier which is running near the habitat. Is it possible that I'm missing something or do I just have a crappy hydrometer?
Normally I would assume that it's just a crappy hydrometer, but Xerxes seems to want to come out of his habitat more than I expected. Probably 40% of the time if I leave the cage open he will want to crawl unto my head or the back of my neck, sometimes he burrows in my hair (I am not the highest point, his basking spot is taller than me). Maybe I've gotten a charming cham, but I'm worried that he's trying to escape a desert-like habitat.
