Hi! Im new here!

I'm new to the whole chameleon world. I was wondering if there are any must-know things! I would like to know about common diseases (if any, I wouldn't know) The best products. Best size cages, and best design. (I'm looking at a female Veiled chameleon)
Also would anyone know where to buy a chameleon in CA. Im by San Franscisco. So I was wondering if there are any good stores
Thanks Guys!!:D:D

If you are new to chams I wouldn't suggest a female of any kind, but that's me. In addition to all the basic things you need to learn you would also need to deal with eggs. There are some great folks on here with Veileds that could steer you in the right direction no matter what sex you ended up with.

Ahh

So the females lay eggs without being fertilized... interesting. I guess a male would be easier to take care of!! Does any one know if the coloration is different, I have seen females, and I think their color is alot prettier. Thats mainly why I wanted a female. I will see how the situation pans out.

Jump on the search engine and start reading! Warning: when reading bout chameleons people tend to loose track of time hehe:D

Welcome! I would recommend a male. I have one of each and the male is eaiser. Check out the classifieds here on the forums to buy. MBD and eye problems seem to be two biggest medical problems I see here. Be sure to check out the Raising Kitty link provided above. It will give you some great info on chameleons.

I am not going to be much help, but my first cham was a female veiled! She was amazing and I loved her to bits. Yes, they do lay eggs without mating, but if you do plenty of research first and ask loads of questions you should be fine. I am now on my second female veiled, but next time I will get a male to watch his colours develop as he grows will be amazing. I too found the females to be far more attractive when I first got mine - in fact I thought that the males looked big and ugly! I have since changed my mind though and can now see how beautiful the males are too. I am planning on getting a male as soon as my OH agrees!

There's no reason you can't start with a female veiled if that's what appeals to you most, just be aware that the learning curve is steeper and you need to consider the whole egg production thing. I'd much rather do more learning about a tricker cham that I want most, than to settle for an easier one that doesn't thrill me as much. You will tend to take better care of the one you really wanted in the first place.

Read the link suggested...it's great. There are other great links to good husbandry articles here also. The Check out breeders too. Don't rely on (or expect to find) high quality chams at a local pet shop. The better breeders don't sell to pet shops and pet shops don't know how to (or bother to) give them the best care.

Although you do have to be aware of the possibility of egglaying issues if you get a female veiled chameleon, it shouldn't present a problem if your husbandry is good. I've had female veileds live for 6+ years without laying a single egg and haven't had one with any "eggie" issues in many years now. Here's an article I wrote to explain how I do it...

Here are some good sites you might like to read...there is a lot to learn before you buy a first chameleon if you want it to do well...

Ok Cool! I have seen those pictures of the neon blue chams, I think they are beautiful. What species are they? Does anyone know how much they cost, I was going for a veiled because I love the colors and low price. Veiled also seem good as starters!

Thanks@!

Can you specify? Or post a picture? It sounds like a panther chameleon. Probably a nosy be.

YESS!! A nosy Be thats it!!! Heres a pic!

Absolutely gorgeous!

They can be anywhere from $100-$500 or more, depending on where you get it from, how old it is, and the gender. However, females are usually a brown or gray color with a tiny bit of coloring on their cheeks.
