do i need a uva bulb
i use a night (purple) 25w
dont have any clue if it gives off uva
It is a "black-light" bulb?
If it is then ...yes.
That is what "Black-light" is....
You know... the kind of bulb you use at halloween or like you get at Spencer Gift in the Mall that makes your "mod" posters glow.
UV A.
And it is an important component in natural sunlight.
And all an incandescent "black light" bulb is is an incandecent bulb that is coated and / or made with that dark purple glass that filters out all the regular warm white light (you normally see) out of an incandescent bulb.
And lets just the dark purple color and and invisible higher wavelength UV A rays pass out throughg to "light" things.
UV B bulbs also produce UV A too.
Arcadia Flo. UV bulbs all have about 30% UV out put.
I do not know what Zoo Med bulbs put out percentage-wise, but if someone knows .. the should post it.
As to how much.
hmmm... I do not know what percentage overall of natural sunlight is normally in the UVA range, but I bet we can find out.
BTW. Chams can see UV A rays, as do many frogs, birds and other animals.
Oddly, for a nite viewing light for herps, many experts say a RED bulb is better because it appears less bright (due to less UVA) to the animals and is less likley to disrupt their sleep.
Tarantula and insect keepers, as well as folks with nocturnal frogs and snakes tend to use red bulbs for nocturnal viewing for that reason.

hmmm
Cheers!
