Awww, that's a real bummer. Sorry about that. It can be very frustrating.
I had a clutch of cristatus start to sweat and darken. Out of the 10 eggs total, only 3 hatched out without any help whatsoever. The 4th chameleon, I snipped the egg after it stopped sweating and had begun to darken. The next four eggs... it was a tough call. In a nutshell, after the eggs started sweating, I pretty much did the hatching for them. I thought two were dead but was able to get them to start breathing.
If I had waited three days on any of them, the eggs would have been dead.
The last two eggs smelled moldy. When I took the babies out, they were alive. But they never started to breathe. So I don't know if waiting would have helped or if these two were doomed anyway. Can't help but feel guilty. On the other hand, I have four babies that I wouldn't have had if I didn't help them hatch out once their eggs were done sweating and were darkening.
I also don't know if a baby will suddenly pop out. I was afraid to risk it with these babies being captive bred. Things were just looking really bad for them.
The 8 babies are doing fine, btw.
I'm not recommending this to anyone. Just sharing an experience with troubled hatchings. It can be very frustrating and you can feel very helpless.
