Hissing

I have a male veiled chameleon named Rnago who loves to be held and to hang out with me outside. Today I took him out for about thirty minutes and he crawled aroung like he always does and when I went to put him back in his cage he hissed at me a little bit :( He has never hissed at me before was he just not wanting to back in or is there possibly something more wrong? Should I let him crawl on a branch and then put the branch back into the cage to make it easier for him to get back in?

depending on how old he is he might just be getting territorial veils arnt the most sociable chameleons all it means is that he was mad at u and didnt want u to mess with him nothing to worry about to much it happens.

A branch might make him more comfortable going back in, or it might make it a bit awkward if he doesn't want to go..........I guess he is about 7 months old? If it's his 'teenage phase' then he'll probably be a bit tetchy for a couple of months. If he is normally happy to be handled then he'll hopefully grow out of it quickly :)

Actually it seems he is younger. Chuck is on it, lol. Don't worry, they hiss a little bit sometimes. If he's happy not to bite then he's a good male Veiled :)

My panther who is normally even tempered, and has never tried to bite or anything went through this phase where he was crazy territorial over his cage or his tree outside etc.. for a few months. I think it was durring the time he was going through his teen years and I'm sure they get spikes of testoterone or something, because now he's back to normal. :D

Be thankful that he is so docile :D Veiled chameleons are not that bad tempered like some say but like any chameleon they can be satin lol one of our other senior members has a different species of chameleon (spiny I believe) and he has to put on his leather golfing glove to get him out because he was being so nasty and hissing :D lol he actually showed us pictures on a thread of it. But I wouldn't worry to much about it, maybe even keep him out longer if you can and get an outdoor plant for him to sit on while you watch him so he can comfortably bask.

Sounds like you have just been spoiling him lately with him being out of the cage so much! You are also mistaking his hissing for actual words saying, "you must be crazy to think I'm going back in this cage!"

Hahaha yal are to funny :D Well I'm happy to hear it's nothing to worry about! Thank you for all of your responses! I got him out again later on and let him hang in the shade outside  when I put him back in the cage there was no hissing. Woohoo!

Why must you bring up bad memories?!? :D He's a sweetheart!

My girl likes to hiss for no reason sometimes! I think it's important to not let it bother you and don't let them know you're scared, if they figure out they can scare you off then they will use it against you and do it all the time just for the fun of it :)

Just don't let it freak you out. They can smell fear and they think it tastes great.:D

LOL!! very true :D

Smeagol gets grumpy too when he doesnt get his way, but I have learned that it's all bluff. He has never tried to bite, but I did ware gloves one time when he was out and claimed the top windowsil as his property and refused under penilty of death to come down.

The worst time for a veiled is when they first become sextualy responsive. That's when they get even more territorial and will often look for a way out of his cage in search for a mate.
Get used too it, it lasts a few months. You can let them out to explore, and that helps sometimes.

Unless you have a female nearby.....then you have to be constantly 'cock-blocking' the poor fella and he'll get angry with you for getting in his way :D

At around 6 months old my male veiled became very cranky. Either do as i do live with Oscar the grouch or I've heard finding him a woman can relive some tension.. or it can make it worse :/ just make sure if he's acting out u play on his terms u do not want to be bit.. my lord is that not fun.
