Okay, so i have a 4.7 month old panther chameleon, and i have a couple questions about his eyes. So lately when i go to spray around in his cage from outside it i have been noticing that when i spray near him he closes one of his eyes. They seem fine to me however. Today i saw him resting underneath a plant leave where the light from the UVB bolb and heat lamp doesnt get to him. It was 6:30, almost his bedtime so i turned off the UVB light, but left the heat lamp on. I sprayed his cage and the area around him and he closed one of his eyes. Ten minutes later i come back to see, the same eye closed and one lazily open. His colors were kinda like the colors of when he goes to sleep. So i took him out and put him back in on the top of the cage where i could see him better. Please tell me i am overeacting here.

Uh just seems to me like he doesn't want water in his eye and he is trying to sleep? but do not quote me and I dont see a huge problem tho. Um wait til tomorrow if no one else answers and see what happens. Maybe you could get some pictures too.

And do you leave heat lamp on all night?

No I usually turn it all off at exactly 7:00pm and on at roughly 7:00am. Do you know why he was half sleeping with one eye open

Well no I don't know. It could be that he is resting it..or irritated by the mist. Maybe even spying on you ;) lol but if your that worried I guess it wouldn't hurt for a little vet check up

The thing is I can't take it to the vet everything something small like that occurs. I don't even know if it serious. So you guys could probably help.
Lol. Just to make sure, you thing everything is okay.

If it continues then yes it could turn into a bigger problem. I am not an expert on chameleon eyes and the possible infections. Why don't you update tomorrow once it is well awake?

I think its just either sleepiness, resting, or closing to protect from mist. You could possibly just call a vet? You don't have to now but you might if no one answers with a more experienced possiblity

I am not worried too much about when I spray around himi was just a little frantic about him keeping one eye closed and one open but he doesn't usually do this, this is like a first. I was just wonderig if it could lead to something really serious

Possibly a start of something serious. You should atleast call and check with a vet. but again this is probably nothing.

When you were misting..which side of his body were u spraying and was that eye closed?

I sprayed right when turned off the UVB and usually spray
like 6 or 7 times a day. Lately he closes his eye right when I spray like right next to him. He closed the eye that I sprayed near. It was for about 6 minutes probably less. And I don't know any vets or their numbers
can u refer any of them to me. By the way, thanks

No I can't refer any because I don't know any numbers. The eye closing is probably just protecting from the spray..as my chameleon does that. I think 6-7 times of spraying a day for 6 minutes is over doing it. I was told 2-3 times a day and for about 4-5mins.

Sometimes they really hate to be sprayed. I call the performance one of mine does "the wicked witch of the west dance"...

I really think this thread should be moved to the HEALTH forum...however, if you go there you'll find a link to vets who are more likely to be knowledgeable about your particular animal.

If he alway closes the same eye, then I would say it's possible there's a problem with that eye...alternatively, it could be that you always spray from that side. I sort of think that's what is happening based on your last post.

You might try not spraying his face. If you need to actually spray the animal, spray from the tail forward....they do absorb water through their skin, so that's not wasted effort.

Try spraying the roof of the cage so that it gets soaked with water and drips. That will be "fake rain" and might be more acceptable to your chameleon than the sprayer hitting his face.
