Hello everyone. I am in the process of setting get up a cage for a veiled. No matter how much I spray I cannot get the humidity to come up past 30 up near the branches and vines. If I put the gauge down below I can get 60 to 70. Will this be okay or do I need the whole enclosure to be high. If humidity needs to be the same all around what can I do to help this?
Chances are the room the cage is in is drier, so the water droplets evaporate fairly fast especially if you are heating your house this time of year. Humidity will be low near the lights normally. What may be more important is how LONG the humidity level lower in the cage stays that high. It might not be very long, as your cage doesn't have a lot of foliage and its screen. Try this...spray the cage down well, note the humidity level in the middle of the foliage. Then keep track of how long it takes for that area to dry out (down to 30% or lower which is too dry for a cham). If the humidity happens to stay above 50% for hours you may be OK. If it dries out pretty quickly you can add more live foliage to the upper areas of the cage and cover sides and/or back of the cage with plastic sheeting or shower curtains to help slow down the evaporation rate. Increasing live plants (and the moist potting soil they live in) and adding the sheeting will also catch and hold more water droplets which also helps stabilize humidity. You don't want a completely constant level, but provide cycles of wetter and drier periods during the 24 hour cycle.
