Hello I'm new

Hey I actually just purchased my Chameleon today from someone. She's fairly grown, not exactly sure how old she is and her name is Teto (tay-toe). She's pretty scared right now I'd say by her dark green colour, but I'm sure that's mostly just because she just got moved. Hopefully she calms down a bit, I'm into the social kinds of reptiles!

Hi, and welcome to the forum! We would love to see pictures of Teto - what kind of cham do you have? If you have questions, be sure to ask. Alot of knowledgeable people on here!

Welcome to the forum. I'm sure you'll find it as useful and interesting as I have :) What type of chameleon do you have? I'm sorry to tell you that most chameleons dont fit into the "social" or "friendly" categories. They are typically (though not always) a Look and dont touch time of solitary critter.

Welcome Eureka. Congrats on your new cham. Post a picture if you can. And remember...the addiction starts with just one chameleon :)

Veiled

She's a veiled chameleon. Well, hopefully she isn't too anti-social. I was told by the guy at the pet store that they're fairly sociable. Maybe he wasn't too knowledgeable. Do lighter colours mean better moods? Or does it depend on the chameleon.

Unfortunately, pet store staff are usually not knowledgeable regarding chameleons. The Raising Kitty site http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/ suggested by Jan is a good one - do check it out. Other worthwhile sites (in addition to this forum of course) include:

and you may find portions of my blog (linked below) of use as well.

Ha Ha!
The females are the worst.
Males usually calm down after a year or two and can be handled pretty easily ... the girls are a different story all together.
Sounds like the "guy at the pet store" wanted to tell you whatever you wanted to hear.
Whether or not your girl is tolerant of you ... I would never sell a female veiled to someone and tell them it was fairly social.
This is not to say that it will not be a rewarding experience ... I would rather keep chameleons than any other reptile.
Enjoy the ride;)

Just like what everybody has said, these beautiful creatures are mostly solitary.
Respect their space, and you have won half the battle of not getting bit.
When a veiled doesn't want to get out, it doesn't want to get out period.
Don't force them or they'll let you have the consequence.

when you respect them, give them food water and everything they need, eventually (or not -depending on their personalities), they will learn to associate you with good events.

I never "handle" or try to "tame" my chameleon.
Slowly they learn that my presence means food, water, and occasional sunbathe opportunity. All my chameleons with the exception of 1 tolerates my presence.

I would reevaluate everything that the "reptile staff" told you.
They often just blab without having to know how to care for chameleon.
The secret to their "expertise" is by pretending they know a Lot of stuffs.
Unfortunately, their "knowledge" often bring demise to the chameleons.

And Welcome to the forum. :)
Hope you enjoy the ride. And, be careful. Chameleon is addictive.
