heading North ?

I know this is an odd question/ observation - as I do odds and ends around the yard, Max ( a male panther ) is almost always with me - on a plant, on me or just hanging out on top of a cage- so every so often he gets off the cage or what ever, and EVERY time- he heads dead North - he will even by pass a tree if he has to change direction to get to it- so I wondered what direction my other panther, Capone would head if I put him on the ground - yep- dead North - ( I even faced him South at times ) is there some reason they head one direction? I have done this off and on over the summer just to see what they do - the only thing I can think is there is a river about 1/2 mile away , and Lake Erie - both due North of us - do they maybe " smell " the water? I tried it with the Jax too- HA - they go every which way - I was just curious, and thought this was odd they both go the same way ~ if anyone else wants to try, I would be curious to see if yours also head North
( just don't lose them in the grass :p )

Now that you mention it, mine head north as well. northeast-ish usually

you have a big body of water NE of you- I wonder if the water has anything to do with it? and the ones in Fla/ - lol - they are surrounded by water- so any direction would be "headed to water"
IDK - I just thought is was kinda neat- I am always watching my chams - see what they do , how they act - fav/ spots in the huge cages vs the indoor -

everyone ask me " how can you sit there and watch those for hours- they don't do anything" - I tell them , " you just can't see - they are always doing something "
I will be curious to see anyone else try this, and see what way they go - lol

I doubt the direction has anything to do with it. There is something he sees that he's decided he wants to get to. He'll keep trying even if you move him around. Chams are not migratory so I highly doubt they need to orient themselves by magnetic field, gravity, or cardinal direction. They also have a poor sense of smell and taste and are not attracted to bodies of water really.

that is also what I thought - but how odd that BOTH go that way - and it does not seem to matter if I put them down in the horse pasture , yard,or by the woods - they both head that way  - I just thought it was odd, and wondered if it was just mine - they must both see something I don't - and that the Jax have no interest in
